Job Summary

Responsible for managing the maintenance, repair, and safe operation of site buildings, equipment, machinery, utilities and grounds across Daylight facilities in San Diego and Madison, with the role based at either site, in support of mixed-use operations that includes administrative offices, optical and electro-optical laboratories, laser module manufacturing, and III-V semiconductor cleanroom/manufacturing operations. This role oversees facility infrastructure supporting site operations, including utilities, HVAC, cleanroom and ESD controlled environments, specialty gas and chemical support systems, environmental, life-safety, physical security, and other critical infrastructure required to support site-specific manufacturing operations.

 

This onsite role can be based out of either our San Diego, CA, or Madison, WI facility with 30% travel expected between both sites. 

Job Responsibilities

•    Ensure repair of company buildings, equipment, machinery, facility modifications, maintenance activities, contractor work, and operational changes are planned and executed in a manner consistent with cleanroom requirements, manufacturing continuity, regulatory obligations, and site emergency response expectations.
•    Plan, schedule, and direct in-house employees and external contractors in the maintenance of company buildings, equipment, machinery, and grounds.
•    Develop and maintain an operating budget to ensure maintenance activities are carried out in a cost-effective manner.
•    Ensure facilities remain operational and available to support business, laboratory, and production activities, including 24/7 operations where required. 
•    Oversee the regular maintenance of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and other building systems, including precision temperature and humidity controls that support optical assembly, laser test areas, and semiconductor manufacturing.
•    Develop and execute a comprehensive annual inspection program for equipment, machinery, and facilities, including cryogenic vessels, pressure systems, and life-safety systems. 
•    Direct building renovations and lab build-outs, ensuring work is completed within budget and in accordance with company specifications. Prepare cost estimates, coordinate construction, remodeling, & repair projects, & inspect completed work. 
•    Coordinate and manage insurance requirements, service contracts and associated vendors, including specialty gas suppliers, HVAC and controls contractors, and cleanroom certification providers. 
•    Ensure space-management and project-tracking documentation is accurate, current, and maintained to support new requirements and ongoing projects. 
•    Resolve and investigate facility security-related issues and develop and maintain the incident reporting system.
•    Implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with facility security requirements, including DoD and ITAR-controlled area requirements where applicable.
•    Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, HR, EHS, Security, IT, and other departments on facility-related matters affecting safety, quality, operations, and delivery.
•    Mentor staff by providing direction, motivation, and support to help them achieve goals and maintain high performance standards. 
•    Interface with governmental agencies and other sites regarding regulatory changes and compliance requirements, as needed.
•    Develop and manage emergency contingency plans, including response procedures for cryogenic releases, chemical spills, gas leaks, utility loss, and other site-related incidents. 

San Diego. CA Site Requirements

•    Support the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of facility systems critical to laser module manufacturing and laser safety, including laboratory, test, interlocks, warning systems, and safe operation of high-power equipment.and production support infrastructure.
•    Oversee cryogenic and specialty gas systems, chemical handling infrastructure, exhaust and ventilation systems, and other process utilities required to support manufacturing and engineering operations.
•    Maintain cleanrooms, controlled environments, and related facility systems that support laser assembly, optical work, and production activities.
•    Coordinate preventive maintenance, inspections, vendor services, and repairs to ensure site systems remain operational, compliant, and aligned with production needs.

Madison, WI Site Requirements

•    Support the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of facility systems critical to III-V semiconductor manufacturing and cleanroom operations, including processing, packaging, and support infrastructure.
•    Support complex site infrastructure associated with semiconductor operations, including HVAC systems, chillers, boilers, process cooling, cleanroom environmental controls, complex electrical/power infrastructure, acid waste neutralization, exhaust systems, and related utility systems.
•    Maintain working familiarity with facility interfaces to hazardous gas, specialty gas, corrosive chemical, and other regulated chemical support systems used in semiconductor manufacturing operations.
•    Support maintenance, inspection, vendor coordination, and infrastructure readiness for systems associated with semiconductor manufacturing hazards and regulated support utilities, while recognizing that detailed program ownership for specialized EHS systems may reside with EHS or other technical owners.

 

The Ideal Candidate has

  • Prior facilities leadership in a photonics, semiconductor, aerospace/defense electronics, or precision optics manufacturing environment strongly preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with cryogenic systems (LN₂) and specialty/high-purity gas distribution.
  • Working knowledge of cleanroom operation and certification, ESD program requirements, and precision environmental controls.
  • Familiarity with ANSI Z136.1 laser safety as it applies to facility infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with DoD / ITAR-controlled manufacturing environments and facility security requirements. Must be a U.S. person; eligibility for a U.S. security clearance may be required.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards: NFPA 30, 45, 55, 70, 70E, 318; OSHA 29 CFR 1910 subparts H, S, and Z; CGA P-18; ASME B31.3; ANSI/ESD S20.20; ISO 14644.
  • Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) platforms for work order, preventive maintenance, and asset lifecycle tracking; experience with Eptura Asset Manager (formerly ManagerPlus) strongly preferred
Qualifications
  • Associate's degree in engineering or related field and a minimum of 5+ years of facilities experience and/or equipment engineering
  • Working knowledge of processing equipment and related support equipment
  • Working knowledge of electrical power systems as well as HVAC systems and controls 
  • Demonstrated project management skills and experience working with subcontractors
  • Proven “hands-on” leadership and people skill while being detail oriented, time and cost conscious
  • Demonstrated skills in facility engineering

U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.

 

The salary range for this position is ($93,121/year-$166,255/year).  This range reflects the good faith estimate of pay the employer is willing to offer at the time of posting. Several factors can influence the pay scale, including but not limited to: Federal contract labor categories and contract wage rates, collective bargaining agreements, geographic location, business considerations, scope, and responsibilities of the position, local or other applicable market conditions, and internal equity. Other factors include the candidate's qualifications such as prior work experience, specific skills and competencies, education/training, and certifications. In addition to base pay, employees may be eligible for: annual performance-based bonuses, equity awards, and overtime pay (for non-exempt employees as applicable.
