Job SummaryLeonardo DRS Land Systems is seeking a full time Principal Mechanical Engineer for our Bridgeton, MO facility. This position is responsible for the design, fabrication support and modification of mechanical and/or electro-mechanical components, sub-systems and systems. The Principal Mechanical Engineer evaluates and determines the design approach to meet production requirements for new or improved products or services. They also participate in and contributes to design reviews, offers guidance in approaches to improve mechanical integrity/reliability, and mentors other engineers. This position investigates and implements or improves processes and tools that leverage cutting-edge and most advanced technologies available in simulation and analysis to ensure the highest level of precision, efficiency, and innovation of Land Systems' products. Key skills are the ability to work and investigate assigned tasks in both an independent and team setting and to collaborate amongst all the technical disciplines to complete the assigned tasks. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent judgment combined with technical expertise, possess an ability to learn new skills, and communicate effectively to team members from different disciplines.
Job Responsibilities- Support and participate in complex technical mechanical engineering activities
- Responsible for completion of one or more concurrently assigned tasks, on time and meeting technical requirements
- Work closely with an engineering team to conceptualize systems and designs
- Perform both system-level, subsystem-level and component-level requirements-based design and integration of mechanical and electro-mechanical designs
- Develop component designs that are optimized for various manufacturing methods, such as subtractive and additive manufacturing, investment casting, welding, brazing, forming/sheet metal techniques, and other relevant processes
- Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions in fielded products or systems and develop approaches for corrective modifications as needed
- Collaborate with manufacturing to assess and address design for manufacturability concerns
- Provide progress status for mechanical design assignments periodically
- Participate in resolution of technical issues within the company and outside suppliers
- Communicate clearly (written and oral) with other company personnel and the customers as required
- Conduct root-cause failure analyses of electro-mechanical components
- Use computer aided design tools to create and update integrated 3D CAD/CAM/CAE mechanical modeling and drawing solutions
- Ability to work independently under supervision of others
- Participate in the preparation of significant proposals
- Attend and participate in appropriate engineering, customer or business meetings
- Support, communicate, reinforce, and defend the mission, values, and culture of the organization
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field
- 10+ years of relevant experience (industry experience preferred)
- Excellent analytical and communication skills, written and verbal
- Proficient with using 3D modeling software such as Pro/Engineer, SolidWorks, CREO, Unigraphics, etc.
- Ability to read and understand commercial and/or military mechanical drawings per the ASME Y14.5 standard
- Experience using Microsoft Office tools
The expected pay scale for this position is $101,553.00/year - $157,661.00/year for the state of Illinois. Should the level, location, or scope of the position change during the hiring process, the pay scale may be modified accordingly.
