Title and Summary

Director, Strategy and Operations Business Unit Overview:

Rising nationalism and strong domestic opportunity present a growing imperative to nimbly respond to changes in our business environment. Current geopolitical events have further accelerated the rate of change in our operating reality. We are committed to showing up locally and being domestically relevant in the 210 markets we serve. The mandate of the Localization Program Office (LPO) within Mastercard Strategic Growth (MSG) is to provide a more orchestrated approach to Localization in an increasingly fragmented world, which includes:
• Providing a coordinated view on market conditions (regulatory and non-regulatory), emerging themes, and potential future states
• Bringing together all of Mastercard to position us as a market partner with governments, regulators, partners, and customers
• Focusing on commercial outcomes (e.g., maximizing participation in domestic transactions and services)
• Execution-orientation, working with country teams to develop the right combination of propositions

This is a high exposure and strategic role for an individual who will be engaging with senior leadership and playing a critical role in providing thought leadership on the implications of an evolving geopolitical landscape, rapid digitization, and the rise of emerging economies to Mastercard's business

Accountabilities:

Expertise and Thought Leadership: Keep abreast with the evolving international business landscape and the interplay between geopolitics, government action, and market developments. Provide a point of view for where the world is headed, and identify government motivations and other key drivers for its future state. Connect the dots between trends and their implications on Mastercard's business. Deliver an informed perspective on the future of payments, competition's response, and how Mastercard can position itself for the future

Community-building: Develop and engage community of subject matter experts across the organization. Establish single source of truth for all regulatory and non-regulatory market developments, and communicate risks, market needs, and opportunities as necessary.

Consistency and Scale: Own and manage the “signals” process from end to end. Ensure all of Mastercard is working towards a cohesive future state. Support the development of strategic options and codification of best practice to support future localization activity.

The Role:

• Own and manage signals collection, synthesis, prioritization, analytics, and communication
• Conduct risk and opportunity assessments, including geopolitical mapping, forecasting and scenario planning
• Generate thought leadership by serving as key partner to teams including Government Affairs, Marketing, and Communications
• Work in alignment with the rest of the team to turn strategy and insights into execution programs based on market needs, and ensuring that the right stakeholders are brought to the table
• Support the development of playbooks and other artifacts
• Provide competitive intelligence, market research, and insight on the future of payments
• Feed back market needs and other signals to the rest of the LPO
• Deliver on other localization special projects, as appropriate

All About You:

• An international business professional able to straddle the worlds of foreign policy and business management
• Have an understanding of Mastercard's various lines of business and how they are impacted by regulation and market developments
• Adept at interacting with senior corporate stakeholders in terms of engagement, communication and transparency of purpose. Can skillfully lead complex corporate initiatives that require collaboration across functional, geographical, and cultural lines
• Demonstrated ability to work across business units and regional boundaries, at global level. International/ multi-market professional and lived experience a strong plus
• Entrepreneurial, self-motivated, thrives in a fast-paced environment; readiness to take-on stretch goals and to deal with uncertainty, while taking strategic decisions through incomplete information
• Strong gravitas, exceptional relationship management, influencing and communication (verbal and written) skills
• Undergraduate degree required. MBA, Law, MA in International Relations, International Economics, or similar degree preferred
• English fluency is required, multiple languages a plus
• Ability to travel as necessary
• Locations: NYC or DC preferred, other locations considered

Salary range:

In line with Mastercard's total compensation philosophy and assuming that the job will be performed in the US, the successful candidate will be offered a competitive base salary based on location, experience and other qualifications for the role and may be eligible for an annual bonus or commissions depending on the role.
