Critical Care Medicine Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Launch Your Career in Critical Care Medicine
The MedStar Health Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship is a one-year postgraduate training program (October–September) designed for new graduate Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants seeking comprehensive, hands-on training in Critical Care Medicine.
As an APP Fellow, you will train alongside an interdisciplinary team at a large tertiary care hospital serving a diverse, high-acuity patient population. Through immersive clinical experiences, structured education, simulation, and dedicated mentorship, fellows develop the knowledge, procedural skills, and clinical judgment necessary to transition confidently into independent practice within Critical Care Medicine.
Graduates of the fellowship will have the opportunity to pursue careers within MedStar Health's Critical Care programs.
Fellowship ObjectivesBy the completion of the program, APP Fellows will be able to:
- Develop comprehensive clinical expertise in a high-acuity, high-volume critical care environment.
- Build an advanced understanding of the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of common critical illnesses.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of diverse critically ill patient populations.
- Strengthen communication, leadership, teamwork, and collaboration within multidisciplinary critical care teams.
- Prepare for independent practice across a wide range of Critical Care Medicine settings.
The fellowship includes:
- Comprehensive Critical Care Boot Camp
- High-fidelity critical care simulation experiences
- Structured clinical rotations through five core Critical Care specialties
- Two elective rotations tailored to individual learning goals
- Exposure to the hospital-wide Sepsis Response Team
- Dedicated mentorship from experienced Critical Care physicians and APPs
- Monthly didactic conferences covering core critical care topics
- Weekly educational conferences with Medical and Surgical Residency programs
- Continuing Medical Education (CME) opportunities through the Department of Critical Care
- Participation in scholarly activities, including quality improvement initiatives and departmental journal club
- Hands-on training in commonly performed critical care procedures, including:
- Central venous catheter insertion
- Arterial line placement
- Chest tube insertion
- Thoracentesis

APP Fellows complete structured rotations through five specialty Critical Care services while working alongside experienced multidisciplinary teams. Fellows also complete two elective rotations and gain valuable experience with the hospital-wide Sepsis Response Team, providing broad exposure to the full spectrum of Critical Care Medicine.
Applicant QualificationsThe fellowship welcomes applications from both Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners.
Physician Assistant ApplicantsApplicants must:
- Have graduated from, or be in the final year of, an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant master's degree program (or higher)
- Be NCCPA certified or eligible to sit for the PANCE before the fellowship start date
Applicants must:
- Have graduated from, or be in the final year of, an accredited Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AG-ACNP) master's degree program (or higher)
- Be AG-ACNP certified or eligible to sit for the AG-ACNP certification examination before the fellowship start date
