General Summary of Position


This role is responsible for the gross description and prosection of surgical specimens. Accountable for documentation related to the specimens and ensuring policies and accreditation standards are strictly followed. Cross trained in other technical areas of the lab to help facilitate efficient workflow of specimens through the entire specimen life cycle including preanalytic analytic and post analytic processing steps.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Picks up specimens from designated receiving area. Assists in and performs patient registration and accessioning incoming laboratory specimens verifies receipt and adds fixatives as needed/ assigned.
  • Places electronic requests for specimen transport; accession and label specimens; transcribes information from reports and requisitions into the LIS; and ensures accuracy of billing codes.
  • Triages all specimens to ensure that workflow allows for efficient tissue processing resulting in the minimum amount of time necessary.
  • Conducts gross examination description and dissection of appropriate surgical specimens. Dissects evaluates and describes surgical pathology specimens. Dictates preliminary gross surgical pathology reports for review by pathologist. Describes gross anatomic features via voice recognition or dictating system.
  • Consults with pathologists or pathologist assistants regarding specimen handling.
  • Conducts quality assessments of tissue samples. Maintains accurate maintenance and QC logs.
  • Reviews specimen identity investigates discrepancies generates appropriate reports and submits corrections.
  • Assists with maintaining regulatory compliance in the laboratory including updating SOPs and participating in inspection preparations.
  • Resolves problems; handles and resolves inquiries and complaints from internal and external customers. Provides customer service that demonstrates the mission vision and values.
  • Discards archived specimens according to specimen retention protocols.
  • Ensures cleanliness of the laboratory and proper maintenance of equipment.
  • Evaluates new laboratory equipment and procedures.
  • May be trained in histology skills. Coverslips slides manually. Embeds specimens with correct orientation and performs microtomy for various staining protocols.
  • Assists with other cross trained activities in the laboratory to expedite sample processing and facilitate efficient workflow such as registration accessioning slide scanning and other digital pathology supportive tasks. Assists with coordinating workflow processes and managing supply inventory.
  • Prepares specimens for send out testing to reference laboratories and shared testing to other MedStar hospitals. Monitors pending log and mails reports as needed.

Minimal Qualifications
Education

  • Associate's degree in laboratory science or medical technology or equivalent education with at least 2 years of training and/or experience with high complexity testing in the designated discipline or area of service required. 
  • Bachelor's degree Biological or Chemical Science Clinical laboratory Science or histotechnology, preferred.

Experience

  • 1-2 years Gross examination and Histology, preferred.

This position has a hiring range of

USD $25.86 - USD $46.12 /Hr.
