General Summary of Position
Performs clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory care setting under the supervision of a physician/provider. Duties may include venipuncture medication and vaccine administration measurement and documentation of vital signs assisting providers with patient exams and procedures and telephone and clerical support. Additional duties include specialized skills that require additional training. The MA Clinical Specialist may travel and/or float to other practices within the system and hours may vary.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs basic duties of a Medical Assistant (MA) and adheres to MedStar Health MA Scope of Practice guidelines including but not limited to vital signs measurements medication and vaccine administration phlebotomy electrocardiograms specimen collection point of care testing and scripted patient education.
- Responsible for successful completion of specialized training for higher level skills within the specialty of employment and can demonstrate ongoing competency and proficiency to perform. May precept and teach skills to others. Serves as a champion for evidence-based clinical excellence. Examples include (but are not limited to): concierge support certified wound care urodynamic studies certified phlebotomist specialist-trained surgical posting certified ophthalmic assistant certified podiatry Medical Assistant etc.
- Assists providers with rooming screening and documentation to prepare for and follow up after provider visits. Assists patients with referrals prescription refills and discharge paperwork and other patient care needs.
- Assists providers with minor and complex specialized ambulatory procedures within the guidelines of the MA Scope of Practice and with adherence to MedStar Health infection prevention guidelines.
- Supports providers and other members of the care team to ensure optimal patient flow preventative care needs and transitions of care. Delivers consistent excellent service to patients assists leaders with service recovery and may train others to do so. In concierge practices may perform specialized tasks unique to the patient population being served.
- Provides clerical support including but not limited to telephone support scheduling registration prescription refill requests and pre-authorizations. Maintains strict adherence to MedStar Health policies and protocols related to HIPAA patient confidentiality and code of compliance. May participate in surgical posting and coordination.
- Using principles of High Reliability identifies and reports actual and potential safety hazards using established reporting protocols. Assists leaders to review safety events develop action plans and implement performance improvement solutions. Contributes to the development and sustainability of a just culture; fosters psychological safety and collaborates regularly to speak up for safety.
- Documents activities referrals and results accurately in the patient's medical record and checks regularly to ensure all tasks have been completed. May perform outreach for high-risk patients or patients who have not adhered to the disposition recommended by the provider. Follows up with patients as directed.
- Escorts patients when needed serves as a chaperone for patients as directed and assists with patient discharge activities. Provides excellent support to patients as they navigate the healthcare system; may participate in assisting patients to find community and other healthcare resources. Engages providers and leaders when a patient has needs that have not been met.
- Fulfills infection prevention and environmental safety responsibilities including light cleaning of environment equipment and instruments as needed. Performs routine maintenance expiration date checks and logging of equipment and maintains emergency supplies drugs and routine supply inventories.
- Demonstrates proficiency in recognizing responding to and escalating clinical emergencies by phone and in person including within the area of specialty.
- Floats to other MedStar Health ambulatory locations as directed; once competent provides support to other MAs within the MSH MA scope of practice. Precepts other MAs and/or MA externs; may serve as a mentor for new to practice or newly hired MAs. Fosters ongoing learning and skill development through participation in and advocation for professional development opportunities.

- Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to policies procedures quality and safety standards. Complies with governmental regulations accreditation standards and clinical best practices. Attends meetings as directed.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED High school graduation or equivalent; completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program. required
- Associates degree preferred
Experience
- 1-2 years 12 months' experience working in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent required. required and
- Externship in a medical or ambulatory health setting strongly preferred. Experience working with electronic medical records preferred. preferred
- One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
Licenses and Certifications
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)-AAMA by American Associates of Medical Assistants Upon Hire required or
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)-American Medical Technologists through American Medical Technologies or equivalent Upon Hire required and
- CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
- Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of patient rights and laws relative to those rights such as HIPAA
- Ability to analyze ideas and use logic to determine strengths and weaknesses.
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- Ability to build comprehensive reports and effectively convey information to others.
This position has a hiring range of
USD $22.48 - USD $39.75 /Hr.
