About the Geriatric Medicine Unit

Our Geriatric Medicine Unit specializes in the comprehensive care of adults ages 65 and older with complex medical conditions and age-related health concerns. Patients often present with multiple chronic illnesses, frailty, dementia, delirium, polypharmacy, mobility challenges, and functional decline. The team is dedicated to preserving independence, improving quality of life, preventing complications, and delivering compassionate, evidence-based care through collaboration with physicians, advanced practice providers, therapists, pharmacists, case managers, and nursing staff.

 

Position Summary

The Nursing Director reports to the Senior Director and is accountable for the overall operational, clinical, financial, and strategic leadership of the Geriatric Medicine Unit. This leader ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, cost-effective patient care while fostering a culture of professional nursing excellence, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

The successful candidate will be a strong operational leader with a proven ability to manage complex inpatient services, inspire teams, improve quality outcomes, optimize workforce engagement, and lead through change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall operational leadership for a high-performing inpatient geriatric medicine unit.
  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop nursing leaders and frontline associates while fostering accountability and professional growth.
  • Drive quality, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and performance improvement initiatives using evidence-based practice.
  • Partner with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes and enhance the care experience for older adults.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets, staffing plans, productivity, and resource utilization.
  • Monitor operational and clinical performance metrics, implementing strategies that improve quality, efficiency, patient experience, and workforce engagement.
  • Promote a culture of shared governance, collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
  • Champion initiatives that support Magnet® and Pathway to Excellence® standards while advancing nursing professional practice.
  • Serve as a trusted leader and change agent within the Division of Nursing and across the organization.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing required
  • Master's degree in Nursing or a related healthcare field preferred

Experience

  • Five to seven years of progressive nursing experience
  • Prior nursing leadership or management experience required
  • Demonstrated success leading operations within an acute care hospital environment
  • Experience managing budgets, staffing, quality initiatives, and regulatory compliance strongly preferred

Licensure & Certification

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the District of Columbia 
  • BLS certification
  • National specialty certification in Nursing Administration or clinical specialty within one year of hire
