About the Job
This is a part time role, working hours will be every other weekend on overnight shift 11pm - 7:30am.
General Summary of Position
Provides timely, knowledgeable, and professional phlebotomy services to all inpatient, outpatient, and contracted service patients while maintaining an acute awareness of the age-specific needs of each patient. Maintains a professional appearance and inspires procedural confidence through the knowledgeable application of skills. Processes collected specimens in a manner that supports specimen integrity guidelines.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintains a complete understanding of all patient data entry requirements in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Understands and practices Patient Safety Goals as outlined annually by the Joint Commission.
- Demonstrates knowledge of all phlebotomy techniques, including micropuncture, venipuncture, blood bank collection processes, blood culture collection processes, and bleeding time procedures.
- Utilizes the two-positive patient identifier policy.
- Responds to phlebotomy collection requests in a timely manner (e.g., STAT, timed collections).
- Is familiar with the laboratory reception/front desk area and provides coverage as required.
- Explains all procedures to help minimize patient anxiety; answers patient questions appropriately and within scope of practice.
- Prints pending logs, reviews them, and follows up on uncollected specimens.
- Works as a team member and assists others on shift in completing assignments.
- Participates in interdepartmental and intradepartmental performance improvement initiatives.
- Performs other related and ancillary duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- Vocational/Technical diploma required.
- Completion of an accredited program that includes phlebotomy training required.
Experience
- 1–2 years of phlebotomy experience preferred.
- Phlebotomy technician certification from recognized agencies (e.g., ASCP, NPA, APA) preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to comprehend and follow policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English to successfully perform essential job duties.

- Ability to anticipate patient concerns and provide appropriate reassurance.
- Ability to adjust to fluctuations in workload, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a positive and cooperative manner.
- Ability to suggest improvements to procedures or innovations that enhance patient service.
- Proficiency in using computer systems as required for the position.
This position has a hiring range of
USD $19.55 - USD $34.25 /Hr.
