About the Job

Unit Highlights
For more than 50 years, MedStar Washington Hospital Center's Heart and Vascular Institute has provided expert care for patients with even the most complex heart and vascular conditions. U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT consistently ranks us among the top cardiovascular programs in the nation, and we have joined forces with Cleveland Clinic Heart & Vascular in a first-of-its-kind alliance in heart care, innovation, and research.  Join our team on one of our specialty inpatient units!

With both Magnet and Pathway to Excellence® designations, we join an elite group as one of only two hospitals nationwide with active dual designations for nursing excellence and an outstanding work environment, as recognized by the ANCC.

3NW Advanced Heart Failure IMC
Nurses on 3NW specialize in the treatment of advanced heart failure. We provide care for medically complex patients requiring advanced treatment options for heart failure such as continuous infusion of IV inotropic drugs, left ventricular assist devices (LVAD), heart transplants, ultra filtration, and high-risk medications used to manage pulmonary hypertension. Our patient population depends on the success of our multidisciplinary team, and a holistic model of care to support them as they cope through their heart failure journey.

3NE Cardiac Surgical Step-down
3NE is a cardiac surgery step-down unit. Patients on this unit generally arrive 12-24 hours after open heart surgery and stay through discharge. Nurses work closely with a team of cardiac surgery nurse practitioners to provide excellent care for this unique and specialized patient population. Staff members enjoy the opportunity to guide and care for patients through their recovery process.

4D Cardiac Short Stay
As part of MWHC's Heart and Vascular Institute, nurses on 4D care for a variety of pre and post procedural cardiac patients.  In addition, 4D nurses care for short stay observational patients receiving specialized anti-arrhythmic medication or who need other cardiac monitoring. 4D works closely with the Cardiac Cath and EP Labs to care for patients after interventions to diagnose and treat many heart conditions as well as preparing patients for open heart surgery or noninvasive valve replacements.

4NE Medical Cardiac IMC
Nurses on 4NE care for complex Cardiac patients. Patients on this unit are mostly post cardiac procedures. We work closely with EP lab, Cath lab, and heart failure. Many of our patients have multiple co-morbidities in addition to cardiac issues. This allows our nurses to experience and learn a great deal. 4NE is unique in that 6 of our 30 beds are classified as IMC. These patients have a higher need of care and require closer observation. We also work closely with the appointed resident team and hospitalist. Our nurses are dedicated to providing excellent nursing care. We enjoy the multiple opportunities to learn and care for a multitude of intricate patients.

4NW Cardiac Vascular Surgery
4NW is a part of MWHC's Heart and Vascular Institute, and the only non-ICU unit that caters to both Cardiac and Vascular patients. The cardiac patients come with various cardiac diagnoses and are sent for procedures to Cath Lab and EP Lab and are treated medically, while the vascular patients go for procedures and surgeries to the OR. Nurses work closely with both services, with a team of Vascular surgeons & NPs and a unit-designated Cardiac Hospitalist. 4NW family takes pride in working as a team and helping each other, while providing safe and quality care to the patients.
