General Summary of Position
The System Director of Sterile Processing Practice and Professional Development oversees the orientation and ongoing professional development and competency management of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) staff across the MedStar health System. The System Director contributes to the design alignment and implementation of practice education and quality standards guidelines and programs in the SPDs across the System. Contributes to implementation of evidence-based and best practices in Sterile Processing and collaborates with entity-based staff and leaders in the SPD Infection Prevention Quality and Perioperative Services to ultimately ensure completion accuracy quality and safety of case carts. Acts as a clinical leader and teaches in orientation and ongoing in-service training courses; and in doing so demonstrates actions and behaviors that facilitate the process of change necessary to support the execution of the strategic plan of the Peri-operative Service Line. Ensures high standards of processing of instruments equipment and supplies utilizing Infection Control guidelines adherence to regulatory requirements AORN standards The Joint Commission IAHCSMM (International Association of Hospital Central Service and Materials Management) industrial sterilization of medical devices and regulatory standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Develops department goals objectives policies and procedures. Ensures adherence to MedStar Health and entity or business unit policies procedures standards/guidelines and those of regulatory and accreditation agencies; takes corrective action when deficiencies occur. Collaborates with system and entity-based leaders and other department heads including perioperative nursing practice and informatics Sterile Processing Department (SPD) leaders and SiTEL team members in addressing priorities and implementation of effective educational/training programs.
  • Conducts assessment of needs of the SPDs across the system on regular basis. Develops and implements action plans for improvement as necessary. Develops and implements orientation and ongoing education and competency management programs in sterile processing to support the optimal performance of Sterile Processing Department staff. Evaluates the value of such programs and adjusts regularly as needed.
  • Participates in the development of SPD sanitation and personnel safety plans and determining appropriate levels of needed supplies instruments and equipment. Participates in developing and improving SPD policies and procedures in collaboration with department leaders across the system. Interprets policies and guides team leaders in their implementation.
  • Contributes to the development and/or alignment of SPD functions and activities across the system as they pertain to the cleaning preparation sterilizing storage and distribution of supplies and equipment sterilizers aerators exchange carts case carts washer-sterilizers storage cabinets etc. Establishes updates maintains and monitors systems in collaboration with SPD leaders to provide exchange carts instruments case carts procedure trays and specialty equipment to Medstar providers surgeons ORs labs procedure areas etc.
  • Maintains knowledge of surgeons' preferences; collaborates with SPD Leaders across the system in the identification of actual and potential needs for surgical cases and instrumentation. Communicates with OR Clinical Directors Surgeons SPD Leaders and other department leaders about supply shortages recalls and potential impact on surgical cases; explores alternative approaches as directed by senior leaders.
  • Sets work priorities; rounds regularly at the various SPDs across the system; and collaborates with SPD leaders on the monitoring of quality and safety outcomes. Contributes to the hiring counseling coaching or firing of associates as necessary. Evaluates performance counsels and disciplines identifies personnel problems and reports same to respective leaders.
  • Collaborates with SPD Leaders in identifying and managing high risk areas due to contamination by OR exposure to body fluids jobs of decontaminating sterilizing and wrapping of supplies and sets. Assists in establishing and maintaining production standards and containing costs through efficient use of staff and care of equipment. Acts as an expert resource for SPD leaders and staff.
  • Participates in SPD department quality assurance committee and activities. Maintains communication with SPD leaders and staff; provides information on aseptic technique and other SPD needs; meets with team leaders to discuss or investigate problems/operational challenges and formulate appropriate corrective actions. Initiates and directs periodic staff conferences to devise appropriate actions to correct workflow concerns.
  • Develops teaches and attends in-service training courses on current state-of-the-art SPD practices and techniques. Participates in staff orientation competency assessment and continuing education by assisting department-based educators in planning and teaching in-service training courses. Conducts department meetings to disseminate pertinent information to staff.
  • Demonstrates the use of knowledge skills and abilities attained by reading the appropriate literature and attending related seminars conferences etc. Maintains current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician.
  • Collaborate with leaders from the Infection Prevention Quality and Safety Environmental Health and Safety and external stakeholders to implement best practices or investigate and address operational challenges and identify opportunities for improvement within SPD. Attends division meetings and participates on cross-functional teams and taskforces to promote continuous improvement in sterile processing quality safety and operational efficiency.
  • Influences SPD Leaders to implement workflow changes that result in service improvements cost reductions and minimize risks of healthcare-associated infections. Acts as a change agent.
  • Collaborates with SPD Leaders on the tracking and maintenance of staff certifications and continuing education records in compliance with both internal policies and external regulatory/accreditation standards.
  • Minimal Qualifications
    Education
    • Master's degree Health Administration or related field required
    Experience
    • 5-7 years Job related experience - sterile processing required
    • Prior leadership and supervisory experience required
    • Prior training and education experience required
    Licenses and Certifications
    • Certification and registration in Sterile Processing (e.g. CRST CIS CHL) required
    Knowledge Skills and Abilities
    • Working knowledge of AORN standards OSHA guidelines The Joint Commission and IAHCSMM (International Association of Hospital Central Service and Materials Management) Infection Prevention standards and Industry Standards for Disinfection of Medical Devices.
    • Extensive knowledge of aseptic technique sterilization processes regulatory agency guidelines and technical knowledge of instrumentation and equipment.
    • Proficiency in use of computer software and applications
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills

    This position has a hiring range of

    USD $42.83 - USD $73.09 /Hr.
