Georgetown University and MedStar Health are seeking applicants for the position of Academic Chair 
of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) for Georgetown University School of Medicine (GUSOM) and 
the Clinical Chair for MedStar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC). 


The Position
The chair of OBGYN serves as both the academic chair of the School of Medicine department and the 
clinical chief of women's health for MWHC. The chair oversees all undergraduate and graduate medical 
education in the department and all basic, translational, and clinical research performed by department 
members. The chair also serves as chief of the academic division and chief of the clinical operations in 
women's health at MWHC. The responsibilities include directing the clinical activities and services 
provided to obstetric and gynecologic patients at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Clinical sites of 
service include but are not limited to the labor and delivery unit, emergency department, operating 
room, inpatient and inpatient consultative services.


The Department
OBGYN at MWHC provides well visits, preventive screenings, breast health, genetic services, 
diagnostic imaging, preconception counseling, fetal assessment, labor and delivery (high-risk/low-risk), 
mother/baby, gynecology oncology care, benign gynecology care, maternal-fetal medicine, award-winning NICU care, urogynecology care, education, and more. It performs approximately 3500 
deliveries a year.


The department has 34 faculty members, 12 advanced practice providers, 40 residents and 11 fellows 
in obstetrics and gynecology. It offers fellowships maternal fetal medicine, maternal fetal medicine genetics, urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.
It is the primary teaching site in OBGYN for Georgetown medical students, with third year rotations in 
general OBGYN and our subspecialties on urogynecology, minimally invasive gynecology, and 
gynecology oncology. We also offer numerous 4th year medical student elective rotations.


In addition to clinical services and education, the department has an active portfolio of clinical, health 
equity, and medical education research. Our research spans research through Georgetown University 
Medical Center (GUMC) and MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI). 

 

MedStar Washington Hospital Center
MWHC is the largest not-for-profit Hospital in Washington, D.C. It is a member of MedStar Health, 802 
operational beds, and a teaching hospital for Georgetown University School of Medicine.


The Hospital Center occupies a 47-acre campus in Northwest Washington that it shares with three 
other medical facilities. Immediately adjacent to MedStar Washington Hospital Center are the National 
Rehabilitation Hospital and the central branch of Children's National Medical Center.


The Washington Hospital Center Heart program is a national leader in the research, diagnosis, and 
treatment of cardiovascular disease; its angioplasty or cardiac catheterization has the largest volume of 
PCI cases in the nation. In addition to its cardiac care specialties, the Hospital Center is respected as a 
top facility in other areas including cancer, neurosciences, gastrointestinal disorders, endocrinology, 
women's services, transplantation and burn. MedStar Washington Hospital Center's neurosciences 
program offers the full range of surgical and minimally invasive treatment and operates the first 
JCAHO-accredited Primary Stroke Center in the District. The Hospital Center is home to the region's 
adult burn center and is a level 1 trauma center.


MedStar Health System and Women's Health
MedStar Health is the largest provider of health care services in Maryland and the District of Columbia 
and the area's largest employer. It has 9 acute care hospitals, one rehabilitation hospital and numerous 
ambulatory care sites, imaging centers, urgent care clinics and physician offices. It provides services in 
over 300 locations.


MedStar's Women's Health service line serves the entire system with a full range of obstetrical and 
gynecologic services of both inpatient and outpatient ambulatory services. We employ approximately 
145 physicians and advanced practice providers. We work collaboratively with our primary care 
colleagues and our surgical subspecialists. We consider ourselves an academic service line with 
research being done at 5 of 7 departments and we have learners at 5 of 7 acute care facilities. 


Qualifications
We are seeking candidates with a proven record of leadership at the department level, with a strong 
clinical and academic background. Applicants should be at the professor level and have at least 10 
years of practice experience.


Candidates must have completed an ACGME accredited residency in obstetrics and gynecology, be 
American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology certified, and be eligible for licensure in DC, Virginia and 
Maryland.
