General Summary of Position
The incumbent in this position assists in the efficient and safe provision of anesthesia services by setting up rooms and equipment for anesthesia procedures; turn over of rooms and cleaning assigned materials, stocking anesthesia carts and locations, and transporting anesthesia equipment and supplies to and from anesthesia satellite locations, as necessary. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • SERVICE SITE PREPARATION - Sets-up anesthesia sites with standard and special supplies and equipment. Checks OR schedules and determines special equipment needed for procedures or in consultation with supervisor or anesthesia provider.
  • PROCEDURE SUPPORT - Provides technical assistance to clinical staff during procedures. Retrieves supplies and equipment as requested. Carries out other errands, as necessary, to insure safe and efficient patient care.
  • SUPPLY STOCKING - Cleans and restocks all anesthesia carts and locations at start of day, between procedures and at end of day per cart protocol. Insures carts are stored in designated location when not in use. Assists in movement of supplies within the Operating Room. Performs daily checks for outdated meds and supplies.
  • CASE TURNOVER - Sets-up for next procedure within designated turnover times. This includes but is not limited to the following:
  • Removes all items from anesthesia machine main shelf and cleans shelf.
  • Cleans all parts of anesthesia machine that are touched during a case (i.e. glass over flow meters, tops of vaporizers, glass over bellows, metal arm for anesthesia circuit).
  • Untangles and completely cleans all cables (i.e. blood pressure cuff, ECG cable and individual wires, pulse oximetry and invasive blood pressure lines).
  • Cleans all minor equipment (Bair Hugger Warming Unit, blood warmer, twitch monitor, holders for invasive lines, IV poles, IMED pumps, Infusion Pumps, etc.).
  • Empties waste after every case and relines trash container with new red bag.
  • Checks sharps container and replaces if more than three-fourth full.
  • Removes suction canister and tubing and replaces with new canister and tubing, connecting all parts so suction is functional.
  • At end of procedure, removes minor anesthesia equipment requiring decontamination (laryngoscope blades, laryngeal mask airways, fiber optic scopes).
  • Replaces Anesthesia breathing circuit. Connects all parts so that system is ready for use.
  • Restocks anesthesia cart to ensure all required items are available.
  • Retrieves all needed supplies specifically asked for by practitioner either verbally or per the completed cart stocking form. l. Confirms OR has required equipment (anesthesia machine, nerve stimulator, warming unit, blood warmer, IV infusion pump) and provides any missing equipment.
  • EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE - Reports equipment malfunctions, deviations from standards or unusual occurrences to supervisor. Trouble shoots equipment malfunctions. Removes malfunctioning equipment from service, tags malfunctioning equipment with information detailing problem, and replaces with functioning equipment. Transports, as necessary, malfunctioning equipment to Biomedical Engineering. Assists in repairs and preventive maintenance procedures, as appropriate. Reassembles and returns equipment to service. Demonstrates proper care of equipment and supplies. Performs monthly checks of equipment and documentation in log.
  • RESOURCE UTILIZATION - Makes effective use of department and hospital resources to minimize waste and prevent damage. Maintains and submits accurate daily records, as required. Completes scheduled and assigned tasks under normal conditions within prescribed time parameters with accuracy and consistency.
  • COMMUNICATIONS AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT - Responds to all pages and communications Maintains patient confidentiality. Maintains current knowledge of hospital and department policies, procedures and standards. Demonstrates a constant awareness of unsafe or potentially unsafe working conditions and makes every effort to correct and report hazards to the proper authority. Knows and responds appropriately to safety, fire, and disaster procedures. Demonstrates initiative in job performance through suggesting methods/procedures to improve quality, service, productivity, and efficiency and willingness to accept and support change. Pursues self development through attendance at and active participation in Department/ training sessions and meetings. Participates in appropriate in-services and meetings.
  • SERVICE FACTORS - Exemplifies Customer Service standards in all activities. Presents a professional image at all times as demonstrated by a high degree of integrity, technical knowledge, personal appearance (neat, clean, in uniform and wears name tag), equipment/work space orderliness/cleanliness, and service attitude. Maintains a good work attendance and punctuality record in accordance with department policies.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required and
    • Must be able to read and follow written instructions in English. required

    Experience

    • Less than 1 year Prior hospital experience. required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Familiar with common medical terminology.
    • Dependable, reliable; must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines; function independently; must like working with detail; organized; able to set priorities; and must be able to remain calm and function in emergency situations.
    • Must be able to learn sterile technique and isolation technique.
    • Must he able to work with all levels of staff.
    • Must be customer focused with a service attitude.
