Description

Manages laboratory informatics team., inclusive of anatomic and clinical pathology-related project involvement system-wide in an effort to enhance quality of care and contain costs. Coordinates with clinical informatics for full integration of all laboratory information systems. Establishes and maintains relationships between system-wide laboratory entities and hospital-based operations to ensure clinical appropriateness of laboratory services. Oversees implementation, support and enhancements for all Laboratory software applications. Oversees the LIS Coordinators and the operational support of all Laboratory applications.
Education

  • Bachelor's degree required and
  • Master's degree in Business or Informatics preferred
  • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.
Experience
  • Laboratory information systems project planning experience; 5 years management or supervisory experience
  • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
Licenses and Certifications
  • ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologist MT (ASCP) certification preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Basic understanding of hospital laboratory operations and ability to apply this knowledge in analyzing operations.
  • Basic managerial finance skills and ability to perform financial (cost/benefit) analyses.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self directed with excellent organizational, analytical, writing, interpersonal and project management skills in an IS related role is preferred.
  • Computer skills are required to be efficient in managing data (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and email programs).
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Evaluates internal and external market for business opportunities to maximize appropriate utilization of laboratory information services. Performs ongoing monitoring and evaluation of informatics programs to assure their value to the organization.
  • Manages LIS request database, has authority for Laboratory approval in the Integrated Service Request database. Manages LIS Coordinator database for IS ticket requests, prioritization and completion.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Prepares and participates in company presentations, in-services, facilities tours, etc., for internal and external customers and regulatory agencies to promote LIS throughout the MedStar system.
  • Provides leadership for integrated laboratories for all information services initiatives. Serves as the laboratory liaison to information systems, representing as subject matter expert in planning, installation and operation of any interfaces to any systems foreign to the LIS as well as any system wide modifications that might impact the laboratories and their operations. Provides internal consulting on functionality and integration of laboratory applications with hospital information systems, CPOE, POC and other ancillary programs.
  • Represents corporate laboratory services on hospital and system initiative committees to facilitate project completion and where participation will serve to benefit committee goals/outcomes.
  • Responsible for developing and oversight of laboratory information systems in support with MedStar strategic objective and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Selects, trains, and orients Laboratory Information Systems Site Coordinators. Oversees field support for the Coordinators. Develops performance standards, evaluates performance, and conducts performance management planning. Initiates personnel actions.
  • Serves as laboratory management resource to MedStar laboratories and hospital operations as needed/requested by VP of Integrated Laboratories.
  • Serves as the Project Manager responsible for development, feasibility assessment, project planning and installation of anatomic and clinical pathology informatics initiatives. Responsible for development of clinical work teams to focus on specifiAc initiatives to benefit the sites and MedStar. Provides justification for changes in system workflow to enhance operations of the various laboratories. Works collectively with the Laboratory Administrative Directors and Medical Directors to determine goals and priorities for all laboratory applications and projects.
  • With the support of Finance, performs cost-benefit analyses to determine system-wide cost savings opportunities based upon appropriate clinical initiatives. Maintains LIS portion of Integrated Laboratories budget and contractual services.
  • With the support of the VP of Integrated Laboratories and the MCIO, negotiates and reviews contracts related to changes in Laboratory Information System conversions, modifications, upgrades and support structures.
