General Summary of Position
The Director of Healthcare Risk Management is responsible for initiating, directing, and supervising risk management services at the assigned hospital(s). Oversees the strategic direction, development, optimization, implementation, and maintenance of the Risk Management program. The Director of Healthcare Risk Management will plan, coordinate, and direct the implementation of the Risk Management program in accordance with established plans, state and federal regulations, and The Joint Commission (TJC) standards.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Designs and maintains a robust framework that integrates risk management into all organizational activities and decision-making processes. Collaborates with various departments to ensure a comprehensive approach to risk management that supports MedStar Health's mission, values, and goals.
  • Participate in and directs the investigation, documentation and assessment of all actual and potential liability risk exposures (including all Patient Safety Events). Designs and implements programs and strategies to minimize or eliminate risk exposures. Analyzes data and report to hospital administration and the risk management department on a regular basis regarding risk management programs, trends, and current issues.
  • Investigates incidents, grievances, complaints and claims by analyzing the appropriate documents to determine standard of care and general liability issues by conducting interviews of staff, physicians and other witnesses; preparing a summary of findings; and managing accurate and detailed case files related to incidents and investigations.
  • Directs, coordinates and administers the activities of the risk management department which encompasses all areas of potential liability exposure to the hospital(s), including aspects of patient care that impact upon the quality of services delivered and the exposure to risks generated.
  • Promotes a risk-aware culture across hospital(s), fostering an environment where risk identification and reporting are encouraged and valued by all team members.
  • Maintains an effective process to ensure thorough, timely, and ongoing documentation of events and claims are entered into MedStar's Risk Management Department claims database. Maintains and actively participates in an effective process to assist the MedStar claims managers in all aspects of the claims management process. This is to include gathering of hospital documentation and other information necessary to support the management of a claim or suit, including securing potential evidence (e.g., records, documents, equipment, specimens). Assists in the collection of information during the defense of a claim. Coordinates discovery requests, including depositions and meetings with hospital associates and physicians with defense counsel.
  • Collaborates with internal and external legal experts in the defense of claims against the system. This includes researching medical facts or cases and assisting outside counsel in preparing witnesses for deposition or trial. Represents organization at settlement conferences, trials and other legal proceedings. Organizes and facilitates meetings with attorneys, patients, families and interested parties to resolve disputes and/or negotiate settlements within administrative authority. Assists in facilitating communication with outside counsel and parties at organization.
  • Participates in the orientation of new employees to introduce risk management philosophies and programs. Assesses, develops, implements, and maintains educational risk management programs for all personnel, leaders, and the Executive Team on identified issues and related activities.
  • Directs and performs investigative activities for all patient allegations of sexual or physical abuse, assault, harassment or neglect; Investigates all clinical incidents/accidents/events that could lead to patient harm and/or financial loss.
  • Ensures all risk management activities, including the internal event report system and patient grievance process, are in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Serves as resource to hospital administration, other employees, and physicians on Risk Management, legal, ethical issues, including off-hour and holiday coverage as needed.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree Nursing, law, or related field. required

    Experience

    • 5-7 years experience in healthcare risk management, nursing, legal or a related field required
    • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.

    Licenses and Certifications

    • CPHRM - Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) required within 1 year of hire date. within 1 Year required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Comprehensive knowledge of risks and insurance functions in a large, complex hospital setting.
    • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, critical-thinking, oral, and written communication skills.
    • Understanding of medical terminology, procedures, and their usual risks and outcomes.
    • Ability to prioritize a diverse workload and work under pressure and deadlines.
    • Experience with process improvement projects and risk assessments.
    • Ability to interpret the risk climate, both internal and external to the organization.
    • Strong leadership skills with the ability to build consensus and communicate effectively.
    • Ability to manage shifting priorities and multiple projects and demands.
    • Ability to coordinate the work of others.


    This position has a hiring range of $111,779 - $212,513
