General Summary of Position
Responsible for performing a variety of clerical duties related to maintenance, processing, and completion of medical records. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Retrieves all records of discharged patients from hospital units on a daily basis and checks daily discharge log to ensure receipt of all records.
  • Answers phone requests for records or assists with release of information as applicable.
  • Collects information from the delivery room and information on births from the nursing units and parents, and enters data into Vital records computer system for completion of birth certificates and maintains related logs. Prepares letters of verification (of live birth) for new parents.
  • Collects information on death certificates, enters the data onto the death certificate or electronic system, obtains physician's signatures, and notifies physicians and funeral homes of the death certificate status. Maintains related logs.
  • Assist providers on dictation and transcription problems.
  • Prepares records and logs for offsite storage.
  • Places orders and requests records and microfilm stored off-site. Ensures the return of records to the off-site storage company.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and is not to be considered as all inclusive.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required or
    • the equivalent (GED). required

    Experience

    • 1-2 years Work experience required preferably in hospital health information management required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Excellent Verbal and written communication skills;
    • Basic computer skills required
