Inpatient Hepatology Physician Assistant Opportunity

Position Summary: The Inpatient Hepatology Resource PA plays a critical role in supporting the continuity and coordination of care for medically complex and frequently hospitalized patients on the hepatology service. This provider does not hold a formal patient assignment but functions as a highly skilled clinical resource, bridging gaps in care and enhancing multidisciplinary collaboration. Key responsibilities include performing procedures, guiding advanced care planning, managing care transitions, supporting transplant readiness, and educating patients and families. The PA also contributes to hospital-wide quality initiatives, leads goals-of-care discussions, and supports hepatology consults across the system.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Support & Procedural Expertise
Provide continuity of care for medically complex and frequently re-admitted hepatology patients.
Independently perform diagnostic and therapeutic paracentesis; supervise and teach this procedure to residents and other learners as appropriate.
Support admitting and discharging tasks for the inpatient team, particularly for patients with prolonged hospital stays and complex discharge planning needs (e.g., medication access, health literacy barriers).
Assist with development and daily updates of plans of care for primary hepatology patients.
Attend weekly capacity call with hospital leadership to discuss length of stay issues
Transplant & Advanced Care Coordination
Coordinate inpatient transplant evaluations and expedite listing processes in collaboration with transplant hepatology and surgical teams.
Educate patients and families about the liver transplant process, including evaluation, listing criteria, and postoperative expectations.
Act as a liaison between inpatient and outpatient services to ensure continuity of transplant care.
Team Collaboration & Rounding
Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds; present patients, enter orders, and facilitate consults during rounds as needed.
Collaborate with residents, fellows, and attending physicians to triage urgent clinical issues and escalate care appropriately.
Participate in interdisciplinary care planning with nursing, dietitians, physical/occupational therapy, case management, social work, and other support services.
Outpatient Transition & Follow-Up
Coordinate care transitions from inpatient to outpatient settings, including ordering labs, imaging, and arranging follow-up appointments, outpatient paracentesis etc.
Communicate care plans and pertinent clinical updates to outpatient providers to ensure seamless transitions.
Support for Non-Service Hepatology Patients
Provide hepatology expertise and coordinate transplant evaluation for non-service patients admitted to ICUs or general medicine services.
Help manage acute liver failure patients in ICU and expedite transplant listing process
Quality & System-Level Contributions
Lead or participate in goals-of-care discussions and represent the clinical team when appropriate.
Engage in hospital initiatives such as peer-to-peer reviews, length-of-stay management, safety, quality, process improvement, clinical research, and QI projects.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, start time: 8:30 a.m.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Training
Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
Experience
License/Certification/Registration
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills preferred.
