General Summary of Position
Coordinates and oversees general nursing care to ambulatory patients under the supervision of a Physician, Administrator or Registered Nurse. Ensures that the Physicians and Nurse Practitioners are assigned appropriate LPN and MA support to safely and efficiently provide patient care.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Provides direct supervision for the clinical staff with regard to performance of their essential job functions to ensure efficient, safe and timely patient flow throughout the clinic.
  • Manages and prepares the weekly staffing schedule for the ambulatory practice at MGUH and satellite locations.   Collaborating with the Administrator ensures that each health care provider has the appropriate level of clinical assistance to safely and efficiently provide patient care.
  • Collaborates with the physician/PA in evaluating the effectiveness of the nursing care delivered and participates in patient/family training and education.
  • Contributes to the implementation of clinic objectives and quality assurance programs.  Participates in projects including but not limited to specimen tracking and audits.
  • Functions as a Super User for the Electronic Health record and assists with training and orientation for new staff and physicians.  Attends training sessions and communicates back to staff and physicians.
  • Orders supplies for the ambulatory practice ensuring that supply levels are adequate to safely and efficiently provide care. Maintains organization and cleanliness of medication room. Performs quality control checks and tests as directed.
  • Greets patients and prepares them for physician examination. Screens patients for appropriate information. Enhances patient satisfaction by providing concerned, personal, prompt and courteous customer service that supports the patients' right to dignity and privacy.
  • Assists in Prescription Refill area, Patient portal messages and monitoring patient/provider communication, including contacting patients for information and routing questions to appropriate associate, as needed.
  • Performs general nursing care to patients, including blood pressure checks, urine checks, weights, lab requisitions, finger sticks and administration of prescribed medications, according to GUH policies and procedures.
  • Performs quality control checks and tests as directed after completing appropriate competencies.
  • Prepares examination rooms and oversees the restocking of treatment area supplies and equipment.
  • Adapts to and excels in the use of all electronic programs utilized in the division/department to include, but not limited to, Centricity. Documents all vitals signs, treatments, and medication/immunization administration promptly.
  • Enhances patient satisfaction by providing concerned, personal, prompt and courteous customer service that supports the patients' right to dignity and privacy.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED Graduate of an accredited School of Practical Nursing. required and
    • Bachelor's degree BA/BS preferred
    • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

    Experience

    • 3-4 years Work experience in a health care setting.  required and
    • Previous supervisor experience preferred
    • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.

    Licenses and Certifications

    • LPN - Licensed Practical Nurse - State Licensure Current state license as a Licensed Practical Nurse required and
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Knowledge of principles and skills needed for practical nursing to provide patient care and treatment.
    • Knowledge of examinations, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
    • Knowledge of medications and their effect on patients.
    • Ability to calculate dosages as needed.
    • Skill in administering a variety of treatments and medication, as directed.
    • Ability to take vital signs and maintain records.
    • Computer skills and aptitude and prefer previous experience with EHR systems.
    • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment.
    • Good interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patient, medical staff, and the public.
    • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
