General Summary of Position
The Medical Staff Coordinator's role fills a vital role as a resource to the senior administration and to medical staff leadership in the areas of: Practitioner Competency (credentialing and privileging), accreditation, regulatory, and internal compliance (to assure patient safety based on CMS, The Joint Commission, NCQA, and other accreditation and regulatory requirements). Legal principles of credentialing, implementation and development of credentialing and privileging systems.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Process credentialing and re-credentialing applications of health care providers
  • Reviews applications, prepares verification letters and maintains database.
  • Reviews applications and other data for accuracy and completeness.
  • Performs verification of reappointment applications by preparing requests for the information letters, tracks responses and follows-up for needed information.
  • Obtains licensure, certification and insurance certificates at time of reappointment and maintains in database.
  • Enters accurate and up-to-date data for each applicant into the database and responds to verification requests.
  • Works under supervision of the Medical Staff Services Supervisor.
  • Assists in compliance with the accrediting and regulatory agencies (i.e. Joint Commission and CMS) in regards to credentialing while developing and maintaining a working knowledge of the statutes and laws.
  • Assists Medical Staff Services Supervisor with duties such as making copies, preparing mailings, attending staff meetings, preparing minutes, etc.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required and
    • Associate's degree preferred and
    • Bachelor's degree preferred

    Experience

    • 3-4 years Experience in administrative or healthcare field required and
    • Medical staff or managed care credentialing experience required

    Licenses and Certifications

    • Certified or working on certification Medical Staff Coordinator (CMSC) or Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist (CPCS) preferred within one year of eligibility. required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
    • Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.
    • Ability to demonstrate ethical behavior that supports the hospital's mission, values and commitment to compliance with all federal, state and regulatory laws. Inspires trust and exhibits honesty and integrity within the scope of daily activities.
    • Exhibits professionalism, courtesy and excellent customer service, while interacting with patients, guests and co-workers.
    • Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
    • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
    • Ability to use equipment to perform duties: computer, fax machine, Xerox machine, and audio visual.
    • Ability to identify and coordinate resources to solve the problem, reviewing recommendations regarding solutions to problems, and taking or directing action to solve the problem.
    • Abilities to determine an independent action or judgments typically by this job that varied in nature, requiring the solving of both commonly encountered and unusual problems. This job's immediate supervisor is consulted for clarification of policies/procedures.
