General Summary of Position
Serves as a critical member of the cardiac surgical team and a clinical resource to physicians and all service lines, throughout the hospital, requiring auto transfusion (cell-salvage), Thromboelastogram (TEG), Heparin management (HMS), Platelet Gel Therapy, blood gas analysis, arterial and venous line management and removal, Intra-aortic balloon pump therapy (IABP), and supply ordering and inventory management.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receives daily assignments from Lead Perioperative Blood Management Technologist, which can include multiple operating rooms, or locations located within MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
  • Reviews patient history and physical to determine type of case, and any contraindications for use of any services offered by the Perfusion Department, review with attending physician on any contraindication and advise alternative solutions to complete the case. Executes the patient care plan and supply results and interpretation of lab test to the attending physician for review and possible intervention. Retrieves all supplies and paperwork to complete case.
  • Using aseptic technique according to Association of Operating Room Nurse (AORN) standards, prepares and setups equipment needed for case and open all sterile supplies to the scrub technician/nurse. Equipment might include cell-saver disposables, platelet gel disposables, IABP, and any other ancillary equipment needed for the procedure.
  • Prepares/cleans, arranges and stocks room/equipment for procedures. Maintains and stocks inventory, such as, IABPs, cell-savers, TEG reagents and tests, and TEG and HMS QC reagents. Documents all supplies used during procedures for accurate accounting and billing.
  • Monitors and evaluates equipment for proper function and report any equipment failures to supervisor; and in the event supervisor is unavailable, reports equipment issues to biomedical engineering according to their department protocols. Monitors equipment for preventive maintenance (PM) due dates and follows-up with biomedical engineering regarding all lapsed PM dates.
  • Participates in the orientation, training and in-services of other/new personnel, as defined by Lead Perioperative Blood Management Technologist or Director of Perfusion Services.
  • Completes and maintains all credentials and competencies required by POC and Perfusion Department to include: Cell saver, TEG, HMS, Platelet Gel, Blood Gas Analyzer, IABP, and arterial and venous line management. Uses all equipment according to manufacturer protocols and Instructions for Use (IFUs).
  • Participates and remains compliant with regulatory agencies providing documentation to POC of departmental compliance. Participates in any regulatory surveys to ensure hospital compliance with regulatory standards.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • High School Diploma or GED required
    • May require up to l year of technical or other specialized training

    Experience

    • 1 year experience in the blood management clinical setting, which can include pre-certification training preferred

    Licenses and Certifications

    • Periop Blood Management Tech - PBMT from the International Board of Blood Management (IBBM) within 2 years required
    • Maintain certification throughout employment.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Requires the ability to read and write; and knowledge of grammar, and arithmetic including fractions and decimals
    • May require the use of standard office/medical equipment (i.e., typewriter, personal computer, data terminal, on-line printer, calculator, telephone, facsimile, copier, sterilizing equipment, blood pressure cuff, or tables); the preparation, comparison or checking of reports, records and related data; and basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of their application


    This position has a hiring range of $27.745 - $45.57
