General Summary of Position
Under the supervision of Sr. Director manages media relations activities on behalf of MedStar Health for hospitals or business units. Develops media strategies, related social media tactics, and media assets (press releases, letters to the editor, opinion editorials, scripts, videos, press conferences, press briefings, etc.) to maximize positive media exposure for the organization. Builds solid working relationships with media representatives and is proactive in initiating media contacts and promoting media events. Assumes responsibility for all media-related functions in the department in the absence of the Sr. Director/Director of Media Relations. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Health's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works across the system with MedStar Health stakeholders to identify, package and pitch hard and feature news to local, regional and national reporters to promote the goals and reputation of MedStar Health. Works with stakeholders, physicians and other staff to develop and create press materials. Provides background/ briefings to help prepare subject matter experts for media interviews. Responsible for collecting data for and developing media reports on news coverage.
  • Writes and produces a variety of videos highlighting physicians, strategic service lines, new technologies, MedStar Health research, and treatment offerings as well as patient testimonial videos that feature successful patient outcomes for media handouts or social media content.
  • Working with the Sr. Director of Public Relations or the VP of Public Relations, helps to manage a variety of crisis situations that require critical thinking and immediate and appropriate response.
  • Actively and appropriately coordinates with Digital Marketing to strategize and integrate social media activities as they apply to the organization's strategic plan in media relations campaigns and media outreach to include, but not limited to contributing to monthly social media calendars that highlight areas of excellence, physicians, system initiatives, and community partnerships. Monitors social media to identify additional leads, contacts and outreach and maintains MedStar Health web presence for Media Relations with press releases, links and videos in the Newsroom.
  • Serves as media escort for reporters in all areas of MedStar Health properties, ensuring media crews and MedStar Health employees adhere to HIPAA regulations for patient authorization and media coverage and inclusion in social media. Coordinates and participates fully when media interviews are conducted virtually, via Zoom or Teams, for example. Responds to media inquiries in accordance with media relations procedures and represents the system in a professional manner.
  • Uses media monitoring platform to create reports on earned media for Sr. Director, VP, and other stakeholders. Supports the PR specialist in the use of media monitoring platforms for capturing and measuring Key Performance Indicators (KPI). Facilitates reports of KPIs to Sr. Director and VP as directed for quarterly, mid-year and yearly reports.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree In journalism or communications or related field required and
    • Master's degree In related field preferred
    • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

    Experience

    • 3-4 years In journalism or media relations experience required and
    • 1-2 years Experience in health care or research environment required and
    • 1-2 years News/journalism experience preferred and
    • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Must possess outstanding news judgement and understanding of healthcare and clinical issues.
    • Ability to think and plan strategically relative to media activities.
    • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
    • Position requires a high level of problem solving due to the complexity and sensitivity of the situations encountered.
    • Works independently with attention to detail given the need for accuracy in written and other content disseminated on behalf of MedStar Health.
    • Work assignments are generally received in the form of broad goals for area(s) of responsibility and require considerable judgement regarding the interpretation of policies, development of procedures, and selection of appropriate courses of action.
    • Able to work independently under moderate supervision.
    • Strong skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other web-based applications.


    This position has a hiring range of $80,995 - $152,027
