General Summary of Position
Provides professional nursing care for clinic patients following established standards and practices. Monitors quality and safety issues. Functions in a nursing work and clinical skills mentoring capacity to medical assistant staff.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Performs general nursing care to patients. Administers prescribed medications, vaccines, treatments, and procedures in accordance with nursing standards. Observes, records, and reports patient's condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians. Dispenses medication as directed. Ensures that nursing documentation is complete, accurate, and legible. Greets patients and prepares them for physician examination. Screens patients for appropriate information. Instructs and teaches patients in the collection of samples and tests. Prepares equipment and aids physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients.
  • Develops weekly schedules and makes daily assignments. Serves as the point of contact for all clinic personnel changing shifts or calling in regarding attendance matters.
  • Participates with the Administrator I in quality and process improvement initiatives and assists in maintaining fiscal objectives. Performs mock The Joint Commission surveys to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Performs patient telephone triage, assesses needs, and coordinates needs with nursing and medical staff. Also provides coverage to nurses within the unit.
  • Educates/counsels patient and family about diagnostic procedures, medication adherence, nutrition, and maintenance of health and wellness. Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information. Posts tests and examination results. Educates patients by providing information concerning diagnosis related medications, side effects, and the disease process.
  • Instructs patients and family regarding medications and treatment/surgical instructions. Provide patient education and serves as a resource to other clinical team members regarding particular expertise. Instructs patients with postoperative instructions following routine surgery prior to postoperative follow-up care. Contributes to the implementation of clinic objectives and quality assurance programs.
  • Orders and evaluates appropriate follow-up diagnostic studies and interprets and synthesizes data to determine therapeutic plan.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures; attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested. In conjunction with the Nurse Manager develops and supports continuing education opportunities for clinic staff. Maintains own clinical expertise by attending in service programs.
  • Works with Nurse Manager to ensure staff are trained and adhere to office policies and procedures, including adherence to minimum service requirement standards.
  • Adapts to and excels in the use of all electronic programs utilized in the division to include, but not limited to, Centricity, Azyxxi and McKesson. Documents all vital signs, treatments and medication immunization administration promptly.
  • Monitors patient progress and referrals through regularly scheduled face to face appointments, telephone calls, and hospital visits. Coaches patients receiving antiretroviral therapy towards successful treatment outcomes.
  • Screens for basic entitlement eligibility (ADAP, MADAP, MHIP, PAP) and complete applications or referrals as appropriate.
  • Manages, monitors and exercise all functions related to the Division's prescription refill line.
  • Collects clinical data relevant to initiate and complete prior authorization for oral medication.
  • Participates in weekly case conferences and work within a multidisciplinary team on assessment and treatment planning.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Coordinates and participates in the review of all existing and new student immunization records and enters and verifies immunization information into the immunization database system. Ensures staff is trained and assigned review duties in order to maintain timely response to immunization submissions and questions. Coordinates and implements both on-site and off-site immunization sessions for students. Reviews and implements policies associated with immunization compliance.
  • Collects and oversee the data management and QI aspects of the immunization compliance initiative, including noncompliant, declination and medical exemption data. Key point of contact with stakeholders in the overall immunization compliance system (including the Registrar's office, University Information Services and the Immunization database vendor) regarding compliance status reports, data integrity and system function. Works with SHC Medical director to coordinate communications to incoming (and when needed continuing) students regarding immunization compliance procedures and requirements. Responsible for the vaccine inventory management and ordering.
  • Administers immunizations according to student requirements and ACIP recommendations and maintains familiarity with evolving recommendations concerning immunization and traveler's health. Provides travel consultation to students based on established protocols and guidelines. Coordinates and presents group travel presentations offsite, participates in continued education activities and works with nurse manager to coordinate and schedule travel consultation clinics. Attends CORE meetings as needed which represents the Quality Improvements management team of the organization. Provides insight and input with regards to areas of allergy, immunization compliance and travel. Opportunities for QI projects and presentations to this group and campus wide. Serves as a resource to the staff concerning travel and immunization issues. Coordinates and participates in specific immunization programs for University Students (including the Annual Influenza Immunization, pre-clinical health and immunization documentation for health professions students, as well as other specific immunization campaigns).

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Associate's degree Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. required and
    • Bachelor's degree In Nursing (BSN) preferred and
    • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

    Experience

    • 1-2 years 2 years of professional nursing experience; must have strong organizational skills. required and
    • 1-2 years Previous office management/administrative experience . 1 year of previous outpatient experience preferred
    • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
  • 2 years of experience as an RN. (Required)
  • Experience in travel and immunization clinic setting (Required)
  • Licenses and Certifications

    • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Registered Nurse, licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia, or any combination as required based on work location(s) Upon Hire required and
    • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
    • Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
    • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care;
    • Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care;
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
    • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Able to work independently and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Project management skills and the ability to develop processes and priorities as the initiative continues to develop and grow.
  • Ability to coordinate work with other employees, providing directions and supervision as assigned.
  • Works cooperatively and productivity with a multi-disciplinary organization and serve as a liaison with the university.
  • Able to document in and EMR, triage patients, assist clinicians with exams, perform routine lab tests and perform EKGs.

  • This position has a hiring range of $34.98 - $62.52
