General Summary of Position

MedStar Health is looking for a Senior Medical Assistant to join our team at Georgetown University Hospital! 

The Senior Medical Assistant performs clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory setting under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Coaches others for safety and engages in the training, orientation, and competency assessment of Medical Assistant staff.  

Position may float to other sites/locations within the system.

Primary Duties: 

  • Leads by example and fosters staff development. With direction from the Practice Manager/supervisor, actively participates in interviews, selection, and retention activities; assists with training and onboarding. May serve as SimLab and orientation assistant. Serves as a preceptor. Serves as Medconnect Superuser and assists in training on efficient use of the electronic medical record (EMR) to include accurate documentation of clinically related activities and best practice workflows. 

  • Communicates opportunities for improving efficiency and seeks resolution to identified barriers while applying chain of command. Assists provider with patient preparation, minor office procedures and with examination and health education of patients. Supports other members of the clinical care team assuring optimal patient flow; manages patient volume throughout the workday. Provides clerical support. Co-leads daily team huddles. Screens patients for preventative care needs, ongoing support, barriers to care, safety concerns and potential fall risk. Conducts surveillance for transitions of care, emergency/urgent care, or follow up tasks such as retrieval of documents associated with referrals and testing. 

  • Conducts motivational interviews that include patient screening and/or coaching on disease management ability, motivation to change, learning care needs, and community outreach needs. Identifies potential behavioral health needs and notifies provider of findings. Participates and leads others in utilizing optimal workflows to improve quality metrics and value-based care. Reports problems concerning patients, families, and associates. Promotes customer service for enhancing the patient care experience. Ensures ongoing compliance by maintaining and auditing temperature logs, ensuring medication supplies are current/unexpired, checking and maintaining emergency equipment, area free of clutter, etc. 

  • Participates in population management activities including an awareness of the populations served and engages the patient in self-management support, care/health goal setting, pre-visit planning, and the capturing of information that leads to health care improvement activities. Performs selected patient and laboratory testing consistent with the scope of the practice. Removes sutures/staples after the provider has examined the patient and written the appropriate order. Documents clinically related activities accurately in the patient's medical record; performs required patient follow-up. Collects and processes specimens, completes requisitions, and documents. Provides escort and/or chaperoning for patients and assists with discharge. Fulfills infection prevention and environmental responsibilities. Updates appropriate records of scheduled equipment maintenance and manages inventories. 

  • Provides telephone screening services. Under onsite provider supervision may insert intravenous catheter for physician initiated IV fluid therapy or administration of intravenous medication. Under direct onsite physician supervision, may insert, remove, and monitor urinary catheter for procedures; may prepare and administers oral drugs and injections. May perform phlebotomy. Provides Health coaching and follow up. Utilizes the EMR to propose patient medication refills for physician approval. Completes requisitions for tests. Contacts insurance companies for Pre-authorizations for patient medications and specialty referrals including insurance authorization.  

 

Qualifications:  

  • High School Diploma or GED. 

  • 2 years' health care experience with 1 year as a medical assistant at MedStar Health in an ambulatory care medical office, or equivalent. 

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA). 

  • CPR (Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation) within 90 days. 

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
