OverviewUnder the direct supervision of the Clinical Sleep Manager, the Sleep Technician performs diagnostic and therapeutic polysomnography recordings. Supervision is provided by the Clinical Sleep Manager and the Director-Sleep Services, as well as, the Sleep Medical Director, physician orders and department policies and procedures. This includes but not limited to: operating sleep recording equipment, cleaning equipment, making beds, patient education, patient safety in and out of bed, chairs and restroom. Performs office maintenance related functions such as placing and receiving phone calls, charting, proper computer documentation, scanning, faking, filing, light cleaning and stocking.
Responsibilities
Provides a safe recording environment
Verifies identity of patient.
Cleans electrodes, sensors and equipment following universal infection control procedures.
Certified in Resuer 'C' CPR recognizing/responding to life-threatening situations.
Complies with center protocols for emergency and disaster situations.
Complies with hazardous material handling procedures.
Maintains instrument/equipment and ensure electrical safety.
Makes sure physician orders are available and have been reviewed.
Provides excellent customer service.
Explains all test procedures, achieves patient relaxation/cooperation interacting on a
level appropriate to attends age and mental capacity.
Maintains respect for patient as an individual and maintains confidentiality.
Has patient ready for recording as soon as possible after arrival in order to maximize available time for testing and treatment.
Schedules patients when necessary.
Conducts CPAP/BIPAP/BIPAP ST/Auto-SV desensitization as needed.
Answers the phone promptly and professionally.
Is a responsible team member.
Completes all assigned duties as assigned with on-call manager at all times.
Arrives at work and clocks in at appointed time ready to work.
Does not perform personal business during work hours concentrating attention on the patient.
Works to keep a friendly, positive working environment for co-workers.
Efficiently manages resources.
Maintains a neat and clean work environment. Ensures all patient areas are maintained in a pristine, professional fashion.
Carefully cleans and protects equipment from damage to extend life.
Minimizes waste taking out only amounts of supplies needed to complete the assigned job.
Provides accurate patient history and evaluation.
Documents unusual or inappropriate behavior, patient's mental age, mental state, comprehension level and ability to cooperate.
Documents patient physical condition.
Completely fills in all appropriate section of department history sheets.
Asks and or helps customer if necessary to complete sleep questionnaire.
Accurately applies electrodes for optimal recording with impedances or 5 Ohms or less.
Places eye leads, EKG, EMG, recording leads, motion sensors, snore sensors, respiratory sensors, pulse ox probes, position sensors and respiratory belts according to department policy and procedure.
Does not omit backup leads.
Measures and marks head following the 10/20 measurement system
Preps scalp, measures impedance and adjusts as necessary.
Applies appropriate amounts of conductive paste to eliminate artifact in signals.
Adds electrodes and or sensors as necessary.
Replaces or re-attaches electrodes and sensors as needed to optimize recording
Verifies the integrity of the NPSG recording equipment.
Performs device calibrations on all patient studies before lights out.
Performs bio calibration prior to lights out and after lights on at end of study
Recognizing and correcting recording equipment malfunctions observed during calibration.
Provides the interpreting physician with all additional information deemed beneficial for interpretation of the study.
Designates wake time by lights on. Documents patient activities in recording comments.
Verifying and documenting use and/or discontinuation of all prescription medications, over-the counter medications, herbal and dietary.
Technologist maintains and improves knowledge and skills
Reads articles in trade journal or on Internet
Attends continuing education courses in polysomnography or sleep medicine
Studies textbooks related to sleep medicine
Presenting or participating in hospital and or departmental in-services on sleep disorders.
Participating in quality improvement activities. Actively participating in professional organizations in the field of polysomnography or sleep medicine.
