The Emergency Department Paramedic performs direct patient care in the Emergency Room under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and in accordance with established standards, policies, and procedures. This role maintains professional accountability for the quality of patient care, coordinates services with other departments, and protects patient rights and confidentiality. Schedule: Full-time, 36 hours/week
Shifts: 12-hour shifts Qualifications Required
- High school diploma or GED
- Licensed EMT‑P (state of practice)
- Basic Life Support (AHA)
- Ability to stand/walk for long periods; bend, lift, and assist with patient movement
- ACLS, PALS, or other certifications may be required based on department
- Additional healthcare‑related education
- One year paramedic experience (hospital/ER preferred)
- Advanced emergency care certifications
- Follows infection control and crisis response procedures
- Protects patient rights and ensures safe environment
- Implements fall prevention and restraint protocols
- Maintains department cleanliness and reports safety hazards
- Assists RN with admissions, discharges, and patient assessments
- Communicates patient condition changes promptly
- Uses tools like SBAR and bedside reporting
- Documents care and participates in quality improvement
- Reinforces patient and family education
- Delegates tasks to UAPs within competency
- Medication: Administers IV push meds (including narcotics), manages IV pumps, titrates fluids, and verifies high‑risk meds
- Respiratory: Manages respiratory devices and cares for intubated patients
- Assessments: Performs reassessments, documents data, uses RASS/CIWA scales, and interprets EKGs
- Technical skills: Applies splints/orthotics, performs POC testing, removes sutures, staples, and drains
- Manages hypothermia therapy
- Accesses and maintains central lines
- Monitors blood product infusions and identifies reactions
- Uses ultrasound‑guided and EJ IV access
- Transports critical patients and applies/removes restraints
- Completes discharge steps and removes IVs
- Supports patient teaching and AMA documentation
- Uses multi‑line phone systems professionally
- Applies HEARTS service recovery method
- Provides clear updates to patients and families, including wait times and next steps
