The Nurse Technician (Nurse Tech) – Float Pool is a PRN role responsible for delivering high-quality patient care under the supervision of licensed nursing staff. This position supports multiple units across the hospital, providing flexibility and ensuring patient care needs are consistently met. The Nurse Tech applies clinical knowledge, strong communication, and time management skills to assist in delivering safe, efficient, and patient-centered care.
Patient Care & Daily Activities
Administer daily hygiene and personal care measures.
Assist with routine activities including ambulation, feeding, turning, and repositioning patients.
Monitor and document intake and output, and observe for signs of skin breakdown.
Support patient safety through fall precautions, proper identification, and safe handling techniques.
Clinical Support & Documentation
Obtain and record vital signs and other patient data in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
Prepare charts and documentation for admissions, discharges, and transfers.
Perform point-of-care testing and specimen collection (e.g., glucose monitoring) as appropriate.
Communicate patient condition changes or concerns to the care team promptly.
Team Collaboration
Collaborate with nurses and interdisciplinary team members to optimize patient care.
Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, including belongings management.
Perform clerical duties as needed (e.g., answering phones, responding to call lights).
Advanced Skills (with competency validation)
May independently perform:
Phlebotomy, blood cultures, and specimen collection
Enteral feeding and wound care (sterile and non-sterile)
IV removal, catheter removal, ostomy care
Trach care (established), suctioning, chest tube setup
Burn care, whirlpool wound therapy, and dressing changes
Visual acuity testing, pelvic exam setup, and more
May perform with a nurse present:
NG tube insertion, management, and removal
Urinary catheter insertion
PIV insertion
Enema administration and disimpaction
ETT suctioning
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required
Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program
Completion of Fundamentals of Nursing (transcript required prior to hire)
Must remain in good standing in nursing program
BLS certification required within one month of hire
Preferred Qualifications
Previous patient care experience (e.g., CNA, EMT, Paramedic, Patient Care Tech)
Relevant certifications such as CNA, CPCT, EMT, or AUA
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs regularly
Prolonged standing and walking throughout shifts
Frequent bending, reaching, twisting, kneeling, and squatting
