The Immediate Office of the Director (IOD) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) at the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Senior Advisor for Data Science. The Senior Advisor for Data Science offers an exciting opportunity to provide high level leadership, strategic planning, and oversight for the entire NHLBI data science portfolio. This position will lead efforts to coordinate data science activities across NHLBI intramural and extramural divisions and the NHLBI Information Technology and Applications Center (ITAC) by working with senior staff leaders of these three NHLBI components to guide the development and execution of the Institute's strategic vision for data science. The incumbent will also represent NHLBI on Trans-NIH and other externally facing committees relevant to data science in service to the Institute's mission.

The Senior Advisor for Data Science will provide strategic leadership to the Institute's data science mission across extramural and intramural programs and the full span of HLBS conditions. This leadership will be applicable to data intensive science across the translational spectrum, including pre-clinical, clinical, population, and translational sciences. This position serve on the leadership team of the BioData Catalyst program, the Institute's cloud-based ecosystem to support FAIR data use to drive discovery for the precision prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of HLBS conditions. The position will also provide expertise to NHLBI leadership in establishing policies involving highly complex, novel statistical support for research having a national/international impact. The position will participate in a variety of NHLBI and NIH data science oversight, development, and implementation teams.

Specific skills, education and experiences candidates must possess include:

• Either a doctoral-level degree in biomedicine or a biological related field, or a master's level or higher degree in engineering, bioinformatics, or another field related to data science.
• Active engagement in data science relevant to biomedical research. Relevant areas include multi-omics systems biology of HLBS conditions, research on environmental or social determinants of HLBS health conditions using electronic health record data, large cohort data, or other large data sets, and research on the methods and infrastructure that supports this research. Expertise in one or more aspects of biomedical informatics, spanning bioinformatics (e.g., genomics and multi-Omics), imaging informatics, medical/clinical informatics (e.g., electronic medical record data), and public health informatics (e.g., geospatial data).
• Experience with advanced analytic methods (e.g., artificial intelligence and natural language processing).
• Expertise in establishing policies involving highly complex, novel statistical support for research having a national/international impact. Broad understanding of the social, environmental, and behavioral influences on human health, and how those factors are expressed in biological processes that could underly mechanisms and potential targets for interventions.
• Experience speaking at or chairing major national or international meetings, committee, initiatives or symposia

If you are a current Federal title 5 employee, you must have one year of equivalent experience at the GS-14 level or above.
