Leadership Management Trainee: Electrical Engineering (Communications and Signals Trainee) 

Location: Location is based on business needs across our 22-state network in the Eastern US. Relocation is required throughout your career.  

Anticipated Start Date: August 2024 and September 2024 

Benefits: $92,000 with promotion to $99,000 upon completion of training program. Railroad retirement, Pension, 401k match, Health benefits, vacation, and relocation package.  

Work Environment: Outdoor/Field, on-call, weekend, and holiday work required.  

 

Norfolk Southern' s Communications and Signals (C&S) department plays a key role within our railroad operations team. Like how cars interact with traffic lights, trains operate using signals along the railway that convey movement information. Our C&S department is responsible for overseeing the construction and maintenance of these signals and their related equipment. Additionally, our C&S department ensures other electrical railroad equipment such as railroad crossing gates, train defect detectors, equipment identification systems, and other railroad equipment is installed, inspected, and maintained.  This short video illustrates the day in the life of a Norfolk Southern C&S Leadership Trainee. 

 

Job Description: 

The trainee program is a 40-52-week journey providing leadership training and technical growth opportunities to prepare trainees to assume the duties of a C&S Supervisor upon completion of the program. Trainees will foster relationships with current C&S supervisors and learn the most efficient and effective ways to lead world class teams ranging from roughly 8-15 technicians. Additionally, through on-the-job training, trainees will learn to speak the language of the railroad, including full knowledge of railroad signaling, and how to install, operate, and perform required inspections on our unique systems. Trainees will be expected to travel during the program, have availability outside of normal business hours, and have flexibility with their schedule to support our 24/7 operation. 

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Effectively lead 8-15 union technicians with humility and trust.  

  • Demonstrate aptitude of electrical operating capabilities  

  • Ability to prioritize and make decisions to own and drive exceptional results. 

  • Ability to troubleshoot technical problems. 

  • Excellent communication and Collaborative skills 

  • Knowledge of radio technology 

  • Willingness to relocate and/or travel as needed 

 

Education and Skills 

  • Associate's Degree (AS) 

  • Bachelor's Degree (BS),  

  •  Engineering - Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Wireless Engineering, RF Engineering 

  • Military Leadership Experience 

 

 

Training: 

The trainee program is 44-52 -weeks in length providing leadership training and technical growth opportunities to prepare trainees to assume the duties of a C&S supervisor upon completion of the program. Trainees must complete and pass certification requirements during training. Failure to pass the Signal Training course will result in removal from the program. During training, you will spend time at the NS Training Center in McDonough, GA and your hire location. Additional travel around our network may be required during training. 

 

Additional Information

All new hires for this safety critical position must complete a pre-employment medical including a physical, vision, hearing, alcohol, and drug audit assessment. Pre-employment qualification drug test(s) are also required.
