Job Description
Primary Purpose:
Norfolk Southern Railroad utilizes a sophisticated network of track side detectors to monitor the health of trains and freight cars as they traverse the system. Each of these specialized wayside devices measure key areas of equipment performance and health to include; wheel impacts, equipment imbalances, worn wheel profiles, freight car and locomotive truck geometry, hot wheels, hot roller bearings and even advanced imaging detection of defects while trains pass at track speeds. These Wayside Detectors feed internal systems that are monitored by Wayside Detection Analysts and Wayside Operations Carman who take proactive actions to remedy train and equipment health concerns during the course of the trip.
The General Supervisor Wayside Detection is responsible for leading a shift of Wayside Analysts and Carman within the Network Operations Center. General Supervisors will ensure Analysts and Carman on their team utilize all available resources to provide accurate real time troubleshooting, tickets and artifacts, coordination, research and escalation of any Wayside Detection related incidents to determine root cause and safely mitigate hazards and minimize train delays.
Principal Duties:
• Adheres to triggers and escalations of system or component issues that cause train delays or result in reportable incidents; manages up and across the organization
• Audits shift Analyst compliance of Wayside Desk Operating Rules and Procedures
• Ensure continuous development and training of Analysts and Carman in handling various alarms and alerts as well as derailment analysis interpretation
• Performs incident analysis and shift report outs as may be required
• Ensures team exhibits professional interdepartmental interactions with Transportation and field Mechanical forces to ensure safe, effective and cohesive handling of issues discovered through the wayside detector network
• Ensures shift analyst well-being by planning and coordinating break periods.
• Exhibits expert level knowledge of proper interpretation of Wayside Detector system outputs, data and metrics
• Ensures team is cultivating collaborative relationships with train crews, C&S field forces, NOC, and Mechanical teams
• Attends and actively engages in monthly supervisor meetings to drive productivity, safety and efficiency
Job Related Experience:
• Minimum Level: 1-2 years
• Preferred Level: 3-5+ years
Education:
• Preferred Level: Bachelor's Degree (BS)
• Preferred Majors: Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Business (any)
Technical Skills:
• MS Office 365
• Experienced user for all Wayside utilized internal applications for support (Wayside Diagnostic System (WDS), Remedy, PTCMon, UTCS, MainFrame, TYES, LMIS, Power Apps etc.)
• Technically proficient in use and proper analysis of Wayside Detector data from all genres of detectors in use by NS to include Machine Vision technology
• Technically proficient in analysis of HBD Kt and Ke value metrics in the forecasting and handling of line of road trending bearing performance.
• Advanced level of knowledge regarding NS Operating Rules and Practices
• Knowledge of system hazards and applicable remediation
• Knowledge of train operations and practices associated with Wayside Detectors
• Detailed knowledge and understanding of Wayside Standard Operating Procedures
• Advanced level knowledge for Freight Car Mechanical Components and Operations
