Position Overview:

In this high-impact role, you will design, scale, and lead employee development initiatives, partnering with leaders across multiple departments to tailor training to each team's needs. The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader passionate about building programs, fostering talent, and working closely with the business. Ultimately, this role ensures our training programs promote Norfolk Southern's values and encourages top talent to build long-term careers with the company.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program Design & Enhancement: Design, refine, and scale development programs, including management trainee programs, across various departments. Ensure each program track is comprehensive, consistent, and aligned with NS's business goals, while allowing for department-specific customization and growth.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with various departmental stakeholders (e.g., Transportation, Mechanical, Commercial, Finance) to tailor training programs to each function's unique needs. Work closely with business leaders and subject matter experts to align program content with real-world challenges and objectives.

  • Trainee Monitoring & Support: Monitor, evaluate, and support program participants, including management trainees, throughout their development journey. Conduct regular check-ins and mentorship sessions, evaluate performance and progress, and provide resources or coaching to ensure each trainee's success from onboarding through program completion.

  • Collaboration: Collaborate with key stakeholders and training teams – including Talent Acquisition, Learning & Development, HR Business Partners, and the Norfolk Southern Training Center – to integrate trainee programs with broader talent strategies. Ensure a smooth onboarding experience that transitions seamlessly into ongoing development, leveraging each HR function's expertise (recruiting, curriculum design, career planning, etc.) for program excellence.

  • Partnership: Work closely with frontline managers and supervisors to align training content with on-the-ground realities and safety practices, growing strategic relationship across the organization.

  • Future Program Development: Play a lead role in shaping future talent development initiatives. Using insights from current trainee programs, propose and develop new learning pathways, leadership development programs, or continuous education initiatives that will support employee growth at later career stages and build a robust leadership pipeline for Norfolk Southern.

  • Performance Metrics & Continuous Improvement: Define and track key program success metrics to drive continuous improvement. Measure outcomes such as training completion rates, trainee retention rates, and trainee satisfaction scores from program feedback surveys. Analyze these metrics to evaluate program effectiveness and implement enhancements, ensuring a high level of trainee engagement and program quality.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education:
    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Professional Experience: Approximately 3-5+ years of experience in talent development, learning & development, training program management, or experience in a leadership role with exposure to employee training and development.
  • Stakeholder & Leadership Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a talent for building relationships across all levels of an organization. Proven ability to partner with business leaders and cross-functional teams to achieve shared goals. Experience working closely with Operations or field teams is a plus (bringing an understanding of frontline workforce needs).
  • Analytical & Continuous Improvement Mindset: Comfortable using data and feedback to evaluate program success and inform decisions. Familiarity with training KPIs (e.g., satisfaction scores, retention rates, completion rates) and experience leveraging these metrics to refine programs is highly valued.
  • Passion for Talent Development: A genuine enthusiasm for developing early-career talent and helping others grow. Demonstrated initiative in fostering a culture of learning and continuous improvement. Leadership or mentoring experience (formally or informally) is preferred.
