Rail Transportation Operations Management Trainee
Norfolk Southern is seeking motivated individuals to join our Rail Transportation Management Trainee program. This structured program provides the foundational training and leadership development necessary to prepare for a career in rail operations management. Trainees will gain hands-on experience overseeing train operations, managing conductors and locomotive engineers, and ensuring the safe and efficient movement of freight across our 22-state network.
Program Overview
The Rail Transportation Management Trainee program is designed to provide comprehensive training in railroad operations, leadership, and safety. This training program lasts approximately one year, with the first six months spent traveling across our network to gain hands-on experience in different territories. Key components include:
- Participation in a conductor certification course to gain practical experience in train operations.
- Instruction on managing terminal and territory operations, with exposure to key decision-making responsibilities.
- Leadership development training focused on operational efficiency, safety, and workforce management.
Training & Travel Expectations
- Week 1: Orientation (1 week)
- Conductor Training 1 –McDonough, GA (5 weeks)
- Conductor Training 2- Across 22 - State Network (2 weeks)
- Road Territory's Rotation Across 22 - State Network (12 weeks)
- Terminal Rotation Across 22 - State Network (12 weeks)
- On the Job Training & Relocation- Hire Location (12 weeks)
- Department Rotations & Promotion (5 weeks)

- Navy/Marines: Logistics Specialist, Embarkation Specialist (0421)

You'll dive into the intricacies of railroad operations, preparing to oversee conductors and locomotive engineers either at a rail terminal or within a road territory. To ensure your success, you'll participate in a conductor certification course, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in our operational environment.

Your role demands flexibility, requiring availability during nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call rotations. You'll perform your duties both indoors and outdoors, experiencing firsthand the diverse elements of rail operations. Trainees receive an orientation at our Atlanta, GA headquarters, followed by three weeks of conductor schooling and training at our Norfolk Southern training center, before heading to their on-the-job training location. During the intensive training program, anticipate approximately 25% travel.
This position is based in our Central Region, covering Missouri, Kentucky, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Virginia.
Education / Experience
- Bachelor's/Master's degree in any field
- Alternatively, 4 years of leadership experience in sectors such as military, manufacturing, transportation, and logistics will be considered in lieu of a degree.
