Description

At NorthBay Health the clinical laboratory support technician supports cytology and pathology services by assisting with specimen collection, slide preparation, during on-site adequacy evaluation for fine needle aspiration (FNA), interventional radiology (IR), and operating room (OR) procedures. This role works closely with pathologists, pathology coordinators, radiologists, and clinical staff to ensure high-quality specimen handling and timely processing. This position plays a critical role in ensuring high-quality cytology specimens, which directly impacts diagnostic accuracy and patient care—especially in time-sensitive procedures like FNA and interventional oncology. Works under the supervision of the Supervisor, Manager, Laboratory Director, and Medical Director and under the direct supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist on duty.

 PRIMARY JOB DUTIES

  • Sets up specimen collection and procedure support as permitted by regulations in those sections of the laboratory to which assigned. Also, performs the functions of a Laboratory Assistant or Posting/File Clerk as needed to include scanning reference testing into the HIS.

  • Accepts only properly labeled specimens and requisitions for testing by established procedures.  Completes stats and ASAPs within the required times.

  • Assist with on-site support for FNA procedures in interventional radiology and OR settings

  • Prepare and maintain supplies for procedures (slides, fixatives, needles, containers)

  • Ensure proper patient and specimen identification per protocol

  • Communicate effectively with physicians and clinical staff during procedures

  • Specimen Collection & Procedure Support

  • Assist with on-site support for FNA procedures in interventional radiology and OR settings

  • Prepare and maintain supplies for procedures (slides, fixatives, needles, containers)

  • Ensure proper patient and specimen identification per protocol

  • Communicate effectively with physicians and clinical staff during procedures

  • Maintains sufficient inventory levels of supplies and reagents within the assigned section.  during lulls in workload, uses time to restock supplies and reagents 

  • Answers the phone in a prompt, courteous and helpful manner.

  • Seeks to continually improve job skills by attending laboratory meetings and in services.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.



Qualifications

Education

  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.  

  • Some college desirable.

Licensure: 

  • A Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) certificate or higher Phlebotomy (CPA) or Laboratory license (MLT/CLS) or Trainee License issued by the state of California recommended. 

Experience: 

  • Four or more years' experience as a California Phlebotomy Technician (CPT I or II) in an acute care hospital.

  • Higher level licensure (MLT/CLS) qualifies in lieu of four years' experience.

Skills: 

  • Phlebotomy skills required. 

  • Basic medical terminology, typing, math and computer skills. 

  • Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skill in providing appropriate care for patients in the following age groups: Geriatric, Adult, Young Adult, Pediatric and Neonatal.

Hours of Work: 

  • Shift work and emergency relief based on business need. 

  • May include early mornings, extended hours, or on-call support depending on procedural volume.
