Description

At NorthBay Health, the Supervisor of Professional Coding supports the daily operations of professional coding staff, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines, regulatory requirements, and hospital policies. This role focuses on maintaining coding accuracy, productivity, and adherence to documentation and billing regulations. The Supervisor collaborates with physicians, billing teams, and revenue cycle staff to uphold coding integrity and assist in resolving operational issues. While not responsible for employee performance reviews or departmental goal-setting, the Supervisor provides day-to-day oversight, guidance, and support to coding staff to ensure smooth workflow and compliance. This is a working‑supervisor role that includes performing production coding and supporting coder audit activities as part of daily operations.

Primary Job Responsibilities
  1. Provides daily oversight of Ambulatory Revenue Cycle coding staff, including scheduling, training support, and monitoring productivity/quality.

  2. Assists in managing provider communications, including queries and other coding-related correspondence.

  3. Performs production coding as part of regular duties while balancing supervisory responsibilities.

  4. Serves as a first‑line resource for coder questions, workflow clarification, and issue resolution.

  5. Monitors front-end coding operations and reports performance trends related to CPT, HCPCS, diagnosis, procedure assignment, and charge capture activities.

  6. Acts as a liaison between coding staff, physicians, and clinical departments to ensure documentation supports coding requirements.

  7. Participates in coding audits (internal/external) and compiles results for review by leadership.

  8. Assists in monitoring payment denials and rejections, escalating findings to the Manager for process improvement opportunities.

  9. Supports ongoing education efforts for physicians, coding staff, and practice staff regarding CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-CM coding regulations.

  10. Collaborates with billing staff to research and resolve claim payment issues involving coding.

  11. Maintains staff work schedules and processes requests for time off, ensuring coverage and adherence to attendance policies.

  12. Ensures policies and procedures are followed and communicates updates to staff as directed by leadership.

  13. Tracks and reports Discharged Not Coded (DNC) metrics to the Manager.

  14. Monitors incomplete fee tickets and communicates unfavorable trends to providers, escalating concerns to leadership.

  15. Assists with system implementations, follow-up activities, and issue resolution.

  16. Coordinates problem resolution with appropriate departments or vendors.

  17. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in education programs.

  18. Performs other duties as assigned.



Qualifications

  1. Education: Associate's Degree or four (4) years, in Ambulatory/Professional Fee coding.
  2. Licensure/Certification: CCS-P, CCS and/or CPC credential required.
  3. Experience: 2–3 years supervisory experience in revenue cycle or professional fee coding operations. Experience supporting healthcare information systems preferred.
  4. Skills: Strong communication, organizational, and auditing skills. Proficiency in Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Knowledge of electronic and paper medical records and health information operations.

  6. Hours of Work:  Full Time DaysMonday through Friday as assigned. Timing may also be at discretion of leadership based on business need.
  7. Other Requirements:
  • Must have a private, distraction-free area in your home for work (HIPAA reasons)
  • Web-cam training will be used frequently for team engagement.

    9.  Compensation:  $ 45 to $55 per hour based on years of experience doing the duties of the role.
