Description

The Department of Psychiatry at Zucker Hillside Hospital (ZHH)/Northwell Health is seeking a Board Certified Addiction Psychiatrist to simultaneously serve as Physician-in-Charge of one of our five New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS)-licensed ambulatory programs, (Addiction Recovery Services [ARS]), and as Program Director of our ACGME-accredited Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Training Program. Both roles are based at ZHH/Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC) campus in Glen Oaks on the border of Nassau and Queens in metropolitan New York. ARS, currently serving 300 patients through nearly 15,000 annual visits, operates in a contiguous location to our other campus based OASAS program, the Opioid Treatment (Methadone Maintenance) Program. The other three OASAS programs are based in regional community sites in Nassau and Queens.

By virtue of its ZHH on-campus geography, ARS represents a unique and dynamic clinical and training site. Multi-disciplinary trainees include addiction psychiatry fellows, general psychiatry residents, medical students, NP students, psychology trainees (post-doctoral fellows and interns), social work trainees, and pain fellows. This academic focus translates to state-of-the-art pharmacological and evidence-based psychotherapeutic treatment modalities for patients with and without comorbid psychiatric conditions. Emerging research addresses measurement-based care and clinical outcomes.

Our long-standing Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Training Program draws high quality candidates to its two slots, with many graduates recruited into Attending positions across Northwell Health facilities. Home-based in ARS, fellows rotate through other OASAS sites with additional exposures to methadone maintenance, alcohol and opioid withdrawal patients at LIJMC's medical-surgical units supervised by a double-boarded Consult-Liaison and Pain Management specialist, and inpatient detox and rehab units at regional sister Northwell facilities. Fellows also provide supervised consultation to dual-diagnosis patients in ZHH inpatient units.

Northwell Health is dedicated to addressing the national opioid crisis, especially since geographic areas within Northwell's extended ‘footprint' are considered epidemic epicenters (e.g., Suffolk County, Staten Island). As such, Northwell has established systemwide, multidisciplinary constructs including an Opioid Management Steering Committee with diverse subcommittees. The successful candidate can participate in this and other related initiatives, engendering innovative collaborations with other leaders and departments.

We are seeking applicants with outstanding clinical skills and program leadership experience and/or aspirations, with a commitment to education and trainee supervision. Qualified candidates should forward their CV and a cover letter to Alice Perkins at aperkins2@northwell.edu.

Benefits at Northwell Health include:

  • Nationally competitive salaries
  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • Four weeks' vacation plus paid conference/CME time
  • Academic appointment in the Department of Psychiatry at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell
  • Advanced education opportunities
  • College tuition reimbursement for dependent children

Zucker Hillside Hospital, the flagship behavioral health facility of Northwell Health, is a 230-bed psychiatric facility on the campus of Long Island Jewish Medical Center. It operates ten inpatient units (including a young adult/first episode/college unit, geriatric units, a women's unit, and an adolescent unit) and serves over 10,000 collective ambulatory registrants in its adult, geriatric, and child/adolescent clinics and on- and off-campus substance use disorder programs. With a large cadre of multidisciplinary trainees and a renowned Research Department, ZHH is an exciting academic behavioral health center located less than 20 miles from midtown Manhattan in Glen Oaks, NY, near many attractive communities with desirable housing, school systems, and recreational activities (e.g., parks, beaches, restaurants, and shopping).
