BASIC FUNCTION: Perform skilled journey-level work applying roofing materials and patching and repairing roofs of school structures and buildings.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principal job elements).

 

E = Essential Functions 

  • Work from plans, oral instructions, sketches and drawings. E
  • Clean and repair all roof areas.
  • Heat and apply tar, spread gravel, put down tar paper, apply shingles and tile. E
  • Place flashing, outlet boxes, gutters, downspouts and conductor heads. E
  • Repair, patch and replace roofs: shingle, built-up, single ply systems and water proofing.. E
  • Apply rubber matting and other nonskid materials on ramps, and repair patches and maintain same. E
  • Erect equipment and hoisting apparatus used in roofing operations. E
  • Take work assignments and perform complete job with minimum supervision. E
  • Work with all District employees, architecture and engineering employees, and with outside contractors. E
  • May oversee laborers assigned to help with heavy lifting and rough unskilled work. E
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to: graduation from high school and completion of a three and one/half to four-year apprentice program and four years experience as a journeyman roofer.

 

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid California Driver's License suitable for driving District vehicles.
  • Personality and character suitable to work in schools.
  • Employment eligibility that may include fingerprints, Tuberculosis and/or other employment clearance.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in building and repairing tar and gravel, tile and shingle roofs
  • Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the roofing trade

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Read, interpret, and work from plans, drawings, and specifications
  • Lift heavy materials in all types of weather
  • Care for and use all tools of the roofing trade
  • Work efficiently to meet schedules and time lines
  • Observe all legal and District defensive driving practices
  • Work cooperatively with others
  • Work on ladders and scaffoldings at varying heights

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

ENVIRONMENT:

Indoor and outdoor environment; driving a District vehicle to conduct work; seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions; working around and with machinery having moving parts; exposure to hazardous chemicals; working at heights. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned tools and equipment; seeing to perform roofing work; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching; lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects; standing for extended periods of time; climbing ladders and working from heights;  performing heavy physical labor.
