Job Summary

Provides direct supervision of facility Microbiology and Molecular Pathology services as well as indirect supervision of all system Microbiology and Molecular Pathology services. Provides system oversight for Microbiology and Molecular Pathology services across Prisma Health to assure the needs of patients are met. Works alongside the Microbiology Technical Supervisor, Medical Directors, and hospital personnel to assure standards and regulatory requirements are met. Meets the CLIA qualifications for Technical Supervisor and General Supervisor and may be responsible for competency assessment for moderate and high complexity testing.

Accountabilities

  • Responsible for regulatory compliance for the Prisma Health System in accordance with CAP, TJC, DHEC and other regulatory agencies. Provides system support for Prisma Health Microbiology and Molecular Pathology testing. Assures quality concerns and Proficiency Testing deficiencies are acted on appropriately.  - 20%

  • Consults with Infection Control, Antimicrobial ASST team, Medical Staff, Prisma Health Laboratory staff, and other health care providers on matters relating to Microbiology and Molecular Pathology. Works collaboratively with multiple hospital departments to provide Microbiology and Molecular Pathology services and to reduce Blood Culture Contamination. Attends and serves on professional/clinical service organizations as hospital representative as requested. - 15%

  • Responsible for system standardization of Microbiology and Molecular Pathology practices to include assessment of competency, computer processes, Microbiology and Molecular Pathology policies and procedures and proficiency testing.  Implements new procedures or processes within and outside lab as needed.  Writes and reviews policies and procedures within the lab Document Control System and the Hospital Document Control System following established protocols. - 20%

  • Participates in management staff, hospital/medical staff, interdepartmental/interdisciplinary committee meetings as required and participates on committees. Works closely with Compliance and CDM to assist with appropriate assignment of billing codes and charges.  Works with DHEC to ensure proper SNOMED coding. - 15%

  • May participate in research activities, and investigates new products, equipment, techniques, methodologies, and introduces, demonstrates, effects, and recommends as is appropriate. Assures new equipment is validated per standards. Works with Research teams to establish Research testing as needed. - 5%

  • Acts as Prisma Health Lab Safety officer and ensures standardization of safety procedures and protocols. Develops, maintains, interprets, and enforces established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality management, safety, environmental and infection control standards to include universal precautions and exposure prevention.  Maintains system Chemical Inventory lists.  Reviews new SDS sheets and approves chemicals for use in Prisma Health laboratories.  Follows up on laboratory team member safety events. - 5%

  • Develops and manages budget for the unit/department, including estimates of future personnel and equipment needs. Allocates funds within budget to accomplish objectives and monitors variance against budgets on an ongoing basis. - 5%

  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, in-service education, current literature review, professional affiliations and meetings to keep abreast of latest trends. - 5%

  • Oversees Microbiology and Molecular Pathology Quality Management and Reporting for the Prisma Health System to include Blood Culture Contamination and Surveillance Reports. Prepares Blood Culture Contamination reports for each facility and communicates appropriately.  Develops action plans as needed to address areas not meeting metrics. - 5%

  • Provides written documentation as required by regulatory agencies. Works to standardize maintenance of department records, reports, and files as required and assists in preparing reports by compiling information. - 5%

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

Job has direct and/or indirect supervision of team members that may include final budget authority, hire/termination authority, performance appraisal responsibility and disciplinary authority. Job will be considered a member of management staff at Prisma Health or affiliate and will have direct reports.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree - Chemical or Biological Science or Medical Technology

  • 5 years - Clinical Microbiology in a Hospital

Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

  • Micro Specialty Certification

  • Current Certification in one of the following: MLS (ASCP), MT (ASCP), Categorical (ASCP), MT (AMT)

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities

  • Compile statistics, compose correspondence, coordinate events/meetings, enter data into computer programs.

  • Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent oral/written communication skills.

  • Interview skills.

  • Knowledge of office equipment (fax/copier)

  • Proficient computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets)
