Richardson's UK operations encompass oat milling, malting, animal feed and ingredient processing. Operating under Richardson Oat Milling, Crisp Malt, EDME, and Micronized Food Products (MFP), Richardson supplies the domestic and international food, brewing, and distilling industries.  

We currently have an opportunity for an Intake Team Leadat our Crisp Malt, Portgordon location. 

The Intake Team Lead is responsible for leading the team that co-ordinates the intake and safe storage of raw material and to provide raw material to the production process.  The role also supports the despatch of malt out of the Buckie storage and leads the hygiene requirements for the main site and Buckie storage.

Key Duties

  • Safe storage of raw material – ensure raw material is stored safely, monitored on a regular basis including SPI's temperature monitoring and food safety regulations are adhered to. Including onsite and off-site 3rd party storage facilities. Regular contact and inspection.

  • Communication with grain Merchants – maintain positive working relationships with Grain Merchants to ensure that supply of barley and other cereals is efficient and well managed.

  • Cereal Intake Planning – work with the Grain Procurement Manager and Grain Merchants as well as other stakeholders to ensure that weekly/monthly intake plans are documented and communicated to ensure safe and efficient delivery.

  • Forecasting – Bin empty and filling periods and communicating with the Gain Procurement Manager.

  • Pest Control - management of contract managed services both reactive and scheduled.

  • Grain testing – work with the weighbridge team to ensure accurate and precise testing of raw material at intake and to ensure testing efficiency is optimised. Working to specifications and industry standards.

  • On time product delivery – work with intake team to ensure raw material is delivered to production on time and right first time.

  • Team Management – manage the intake and weighbridge teams to ensure that area of responsibility runs efficiently and that team members are fully informed and engaged on daily/weekly and longer-term departmental objectives.

  • Team Development – ensure the production team are coached and developed to have a range of skills and retaining key skills to meet the needs of the business. Ensure that mandatory training levels are maintained, and learning opportunities are identified.

  • Energy efficiency – ensure that the barley drying operation runs efficiently to minimise energy usage whilst achieving and maintaining product standards.

  • Reporting – Provide daily, weekly and monthly updates including to stock levels and underbuy figures. Physical monthly stock checks and month end reporting.

  • Health and Safety – Work with site management to ensure compliance to health and safety procedures and take an active role in improving site safety. Full accountability for the H&S within area of responsibility.

  • Hygiene – ensure all areas are clean and tidy and complies with health and food safety regulations. Carry out daily inspection of areas and ensure actions are assigned and completed. Complete monthly workplace inspections to maintain standards.

  •  Be part of the duty manager rota

  • Intake of raw material to meet a pre-determined specification which meets the requirement of the production department.

  • Work with the Grain Procurement Manager to ensure all raw material is delivered within a contractual delivery period, without incurring additional cost.

  • Manage intake to maximise storage space and reduce unused space in storage locations.

  • Ensure grain is stored safely and monitored as described in the AHDB safe storage guidelines to prevent spoilage or infestation both on site and at outside storage locations. Ensure documentation is complete.

  • Optimise drying process to ensure grain enters storage and optimal moisture and temperature without damage from the drying process.

  • Work with the intake team to ensure drying process is monitored and documentation is completed.

  • Work with Team members to set personal development plans to be reviewed on a regular basis.

  • Arrange team and individual training (from both internal and external sources) in accordance with personal development plans of the team.

  • Work closely with Barley administration.

  • Work with the maintenance team to optimise running potential of plant machinery to ensure efficient running. Use the CMMS system to proactively record and plan both reactive and planned maintenance tasks.

  • Optimise drying process to reduce energy usage and meet site energy targets.

  • Work with weighbridge operators to perform accurate and precise testing of each raw material delivery against a pre-determined specification.

  • Work with the laboratory manager to ensure all testing equipment is maintained and calibrated. Ensure regular checks are completed using known samples to ensure accurate testing. Ensure that grain dormancy and pre steep sampling is done to schedule.

  • Work with the intake and weighbridge team to ensure tested grain is directed to the correct tipping location and avoid mixing of product by incorrect testing or tipping.

  • Work with intake team to ensure product reaches the production process on time avoiding lost time to the production process.

  • Work with the maintenance team to prevent plant breakdowns that could result in loss of production time.

  • Ensure all team members are trained against relevant safe systems of work and risk assessments and play an active role in development and maintenance of these procedures.

  • Work with the production team to increase hazards reporting and implement actions to reduce the risk identified hazards. 

  • Ensure workplace inspections are completed monthly and documentation is maintained.

  • Ensure all plants are kept clean and tidy to an auditable standard to ensure compliance to food safety regulations and customer requirements.

  • Ensure cleaning records and associated documentation is maintained.

  • Ensure food safety audits are completed and records are maintained.
