SAIC is seeking an organized and motivated Mechanical Engineer who is looking for an opportunity to grow with our company as we continue to expand our support for the Propulsion Test Facility (PTF) at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, RI. The candidate must be able to work effectively in a collaborative team of engineers and technicians to support the maintenance and operation of an advanced Naval Test Facility as well as the design and modernization of torpedo test equipment. The PTF specializes in the test and characterization of torpedo mechanical systems including propulsion, combustion, fluid pump, and control systems. The primary work focus will involve developing new and modernized concepts for mechanical test equipment as well as the incorporation of modifications to current systems and facility infrastructure including fluid and gas handling, industrial equipment, and complex test and automation systems. The candidate must be self-motivated, accountable, and present themselves professionally in front of customers and peers. The ideal candidate will bring creativity, a strong work ethic, and the propensity to learn and grow within the organization.
Job Duties:
- Design mechanical systems for underwater applications, custom data acquisition systems, and automated test hardware for land-based testing of naval systems.
- Create fully documented technical data packages (TDPs) for the mechanical systems including fabrication drawings for all mechanical components and controlling the configuration management of the TDP.
- Tasking will include project management of products assigned, including resource management, scheduling, inventory management and quality assurance of products.
- Work directly with vendors and manufacturers of mechanical systems and custom assemblies to ensure on time and sufficient deliverables.
- Must demonstrate strong organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple tasks concurrently with changing deadlines and priorities.
- Must be able to work in a team environment while completing tasks with limited supervision.
- Ability to interact directly with customers to extract requirements, generate a plan, and report status of the assigned project(s).
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and two (2) years or more experience.
- Proficiency in CAD software for the development of 3D models and 2D drawings and templates, preferably SolidWorks.
- Experience with GD&T, preferably went through some formal training.
- Experience creating fully dimensioned and detailed manufacturing drawings for mechanical components and assemblies including applying the appropriate GD&T to all drawings.
- Knowledge and understanding of mechanical and electrical systems.
- Must be highly motivated and have excellent problem solving skills.
- Must be a US citizen able to obtain clearance up to the level of SECRET.
Desired:
- Knowledge of best design practices to prevent issues during the fabrication phase of the project.
- Experience developing bills of materials for complex assemblies to incorporate on 2D drawings and to use as a costing and tracking tool during projects.
- Hands-on mindset with a willingness to help during the fabrication and test phases of the project if required.
