SAIC has an opening for an organized and motivated Senior Mechanical Engineer who is looking for an opportunity to grow with our company as we continue to expand our support for the Propulsion Test Facility at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, RI.
This job requires a broad engineering skillset, well-developed work habits, and an eagerness and enthusiasm for solving engineering challenges. Your projects will include the design, documentation and testing of a wide array of systems in the areas of torpedo test equipment and support systems, Automated Test Equipment (ATE), system design, facility infrastructure, and other evolving tasking. You will work as a part of a team comprised of engineers of other disciplines to complete projects, such as computer engineers, test engineers, electrical engineers, and systems engineers. You should be able to self-manage/self-direct projects, and communicate regularly with customers, engineers, logisticians and technicians.
Job Duties:
- Design mechanical systems for underwater applications, custom data acquisition systems, and automated test hardware for land-based testing of naval systems.
- Create complete technical data packages (TDPs) for the systems including fabrication drawings of all hardware. Control the configuration management of the completed TDPs using established facility processes and software.
- The candidate will need a broad engineering skill-set, well-developed work habits, an enthusiasm for the work, the willingness to get hands-on with the projects when required, an eagerness to learn new things, and the ability to work through challenging projects without extensive oversight.
- The individual will be responsible for leadership throughout the entire project from customer concept to post-test analysis/ facility approval. These projects will broadly include the design and fabrication of components and interfaces for electrical and mechanical systems for both test items and facility infrastructure.
- The candidate will have to be detail oriented and possess excellent communication skills to ensure all aspects of the project remain on time and on budget while meeting all requirements.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and five (5) or more years of experience OR M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and three (3) or more years of experience.
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain SECRET level clearance.
- Experience with most of the following:
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of mechanical and electrical systems.
- Proficiency in CAD software for the development of 3D models and 2D drawings and templates, preferably SolidWorks.
- Experience developing bills of material (BOMs) for complex assemblies to incorporate on 2D drawings and to use as a costing and tracking tool during projects.
- Experience creating fabrication drawings, including the use of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Knowledge of best design practices to prevent issues during the fabrication phase of the project.
- Must be highly motivated and have excellent problem-solving skills.
- Must demonstrate strong organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple tasks concurrently with changing deadlines and priorities.
- Must be able to work in a customer facing team environment while completing tasks in an unsupervised and self-directed fashion.
- Proficiency in technical writing for all forms of test documentation is preferred.
