Position Summary: The Sr. Controls Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing PLC based machine control systems for automated and semi-automated production equipment. Design work includes PLC programming, electrical cabinet design, specification and sourcing of electrical and electro-mechanical hardware. Build electrical cabinets and panels for projects when required. Also responsible for programming and integration of robots for assembly and machining operations. Support existing PLC and robot-based equipment to maintain factory throughput.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Communicate with mechanical engineers to generate concepts, detailed sequence of operations, and specify special electro-mechanical hardware to meet project requirements.
- Manage multiple projects to synchronize with mechanical hardware delivery to meet final project deadlines. Document project progress with established project tracker for communication to team members and management.
- Provide detailed documentation for PLC and robotic programs, I/O lists, bill of materials and electrical schematics. Maintain documentation if modifications are required.
- Wire and build complete electrical panels, cabinets, and HMI displays. Wire completed machinery.
- Thoroughly debug control systems with Mechanical Engineering to meet SIG machine spec runoff requirements, NFPA 79 electrical and OSHA safety standards.
- Quickly respond to troubleshoot existing production equipment to maintain output. This includes specialized assembly and test equipment, automated CNC equipment and robotic systems.
- Resolve and prevent quality issues by applying state of the art sensor, vision technology and fail-safe controls programming.
- Communicate with all levels of production management and engineering regarding project status and troubleshooting duties.
- Work with Manufacturing Engineers to generate detailed machine specifications for turnkey, automated systems.
- Research new technology for machine control systems and automation to reduce manufacturing cost and improve throughput.
- Provide controls cost estimates to Manufacturing Engineers to generate annual cost savings plan.
- Perform as technical leader and resource to co-works while actively mentoring less senior Engineers/Specialists.
- May lead and actively volunteers for continuous improvement projects/tasks.
- Participate in 5S Workplace organizational activities and maintain the area in good working order through sustainment activities, including requests for maintenance when needed for both personal space and multi-use department spaces.

Education/Experience & Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical discipline with 7-10 years of previous experience.
- Proficiency with multiple PLC software packages including but not limited to Allen-Bradley and Mitsubishi.
- Must be able to rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
- Must be proficient using Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, and monday.com.
- Overall, must be able to work in a team, lead, plan, and execute multiple projects.
- Quality of work must be very high.
- Organization of documentation and recordkeeping shall be to a high standard. Skilled at the use of Gantt charts and formal project management techniques.
- Must be able to clearly, concisely, and accurately convey ideas and information to others, both verbally and in written form.
- In depth knowledge of servo driven systems, load cells, sensors and HMI displays.
- In depth knowledge of hydraulics and pneumatics.
- In depth knowledge of NFPA 79 electrical and OSHA safety standards is preferred.
- In depth knowledge of programming robotic systems is preferred.
- Proficient CAD skills for documentation of electrical schematics and panel layout.
- Possesses a wide degree of creativity and latitude.
Working Conditions:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer using a keyboard and mouse performing repetitive tasks.
- Ability to open file cabinets, reach with hands and arms, bend, and twist, lift and move files.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
