The Office of Professional Regulation (OPR) protects the public from unprofessional conduct of licensed professionals through administrative actions that restrict or remove a licensee's ability to practice.  In this role, you will serve as Deputy Chief Prosecutor for a team of four prosecuting attorneys and report directly to the Chief Prosecutor. The prosecution team represents the State of Vermont in the screening, evaluation, and prosecution of administrative complaints of unprofessional conduct in 50 professions. Many of these complaints are also criminal in nature. This position will be responsible for handling a vertical caseload, from the decision to charge through appeal, in a fast-paced work environment involving an array of interesting professions from Boxing/MMA to Veterinarians to Tattoo Artists and Body Piercers to Nurses, Osteopaths, Therapists, and more: https://sos.vermont.gov/opr/professions/. 

 

This position primarily focuses on litigation with a large and varied caseload; however, it also includes mentoring attorneys, engaging in policy decisions, supervising administrative and legal staff, and working with investigators.  Duties include reviewing unprofessional conduct complaints and investigations within an investigative team, which includes investigators and members of the profession.  Litigation responsibilities include conducting discovery, motion practice, depositions, trial preparation, summary suspension hearings, and final merits hearings before professional Boards and Administrative Law Officers.  
 
This position is a full-time, exempt position in Montpelier.  Salary and benefits will be based upon qualifications and experience following the SOV Attorney Pay Plan.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be admitted to practice law in Vermont. A solid litigation background with a minimum of five years of criminal or general civil/administrative litigation practice is required. Candidates must also have strong organizational skills; good legal research skills; clear, concise writing ability; and excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience mentoring or supervising attorneys is preferred.
