Overview

The Public Drinking Water Program is seeking an Environmental Engineer who is passionate about protecting public health through safe and reliable drinking water. You will join a collaborative team of engineers and scientists reviewing and providing input on projects from planning through permitting. You will be working closely with internal programs-Operations, Compliance, Capacity Development, and Water Resources-to help communities implement sustainable, resilient drinking water projects in compliance with the Water Supply Rule.

  • Demonstrated experience and strong understanding of drinking water planning, treatment, and distribution.
  • The ability to critically review engineering drawings, specifications, and reports with attention to detail.

  • Interest in professional growth-we actively support pursuit of engineering licensure, training, and collaborative opportunities.

 

The Agency of Natural Resources and Drinking Water Program offers:

  • A hybrid work model with minimal in-office time required once trained.
  • Field site visits during sanitary surveys.

This is a limited-service position through September 2027, with the potential for extension depending on funding and program needs. Vermont offers a comprehensive benefits package valued at approximately 30% of total compensation, along with flexible scheduling and a strong commitment to work-life balance. Overtime is rarely required and always compensated.

Who May Apply

This position, Environmental Engineer VII - Public Drinking Water Program - Limited Service (Job Requisition #52658), is open to all State employees and external applicants.  It is a Limited Service position, which is non-tenured and authorized for a specific period of time. Limited Service positions are established for specially funded projects or programs.

Environmental Factors

Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or higher in environmental, sanitary, chemical, water resources, civil or mechanical engineering or a related field AND four (4) or more years of experience in in a related engineering field 

 

OR

 

One (1) year or more of experience as an Environmental Engineer VI or two (2) years or more as an Environmental Engineer V.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters Degree in environmental, sanitary, chemical, water resources, civil or mechanical engineering or a related

Registration as a Professional Engineer in Vermont, by written examination, in the fields of civil, civil/sanitary, environmental or sanitary.
