Your Role:
We are seeking a full-time Junior-level Engineer for our Kansas City, MO operations to provide support on various environmental projects throughout Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri. Experience in performing hazardous waste site investigations and technical writing is required. Proficiency with various types of sampling, including low-flow groundwater sampling, surface water, sediment, soil, subsurface vapor, and air sampling is desired. Experience preforming CERCLA Remedial Investigations and Feasibility Studies (RI/FS), Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA), or other remedial alternative and cost estimating experience is a plus. Familiarity with ASTM standards for and experience conducting Phase I and II environmental site assessments is also a plus. This position will primarily support investigations and removal/remedial activities at Superfund sites located throughout EPA Region 7 (Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska). However, work at other sites throughout the US may also be required.
Responsibilities may include field sampling; interpretation of sampling data; cost estimating to support evaluation of remedial alternatives, including obtaining bids for vendors and subcontractors; and preparation of sampling plans, investigation reports, feasibility studies, and remedial system designs. This position will require outdoor work and overnight travel.
Other tasks could include preparation of sampling plans and health and safety plans, interpretation of sample data and preparation of data summary reports, regular maintenance and calibration of equipment used during field studies, and supporting other environmental studies throughout the four-state region.
In this position you will be part of multiple project teams, in some cases as a project manager and in other cases as project support staff. You will gain valuable data collection experience in the field, while managing project budgets and preparing detailed analysis of field data and project reports. Tetra Tech provides mentoring and training opportunities to help junior staff hone their areas of expertise and diversify their interests.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have 1 to 3 years of professional environmental consulting experience, with history of increasing responsibility, and is a competent technical writer. Your experience should include characterization of hazardous waste sites and preparation of technical reports. Experience with remediation design or remediation project management is a plus. Previous experience at EPA Superfund sites is preferred but not required. Candidates must also have/be:
- Must possess strong analytical, organizational and communication skills (both written and verbal).
- Must also be highly motivated, customer focused and work well in a team environment.
- Proficiency with MS Word and Excel also preferred.
- Experience with MS Access and cost estimating software is a plus.
In addition:
- This position requires driving on a regular basis. Passing a motor vehicle record background check and maintaining a valid driver's license and good driving record is required.
- This position requires passing a criminal background check.
Education and Certifications:
B.S. degree in Environmental, Chemical, or Civil Engineering or related engineering field and having the educational background to be able to obtain a Professional Engineering license is required. Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EIT) is a plus.
Completion of 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training and current 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher training are required to perform this work. If the successful candidate does not already possess this training, Tetra Tech will provide training prior to initiating regular work duties in the field.
Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift sample coolers and other equipment up to 50 pounds. Must be able to wear full-face respirator and complete annual medical monitoring program, including pulmonary function testing.
Work Environment:
This position will require outdoor work within the four-state area of Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska during all seasons, including peak summer and winter conditions, with opportunities to support projects throughout the country. Projects outside the Kansas City area will require overnight travel.
This position requires 25-35% travel.
