Tetra Tech is adding a Senior Specialist Rock Mechanics Engineer to our growing Rock Engineering Team based in Vancouver, BC.

Tetra Tech's Rock Engineering Group has been a core part of Tetra Tech's Vancouver office since the late 1970s and comprises members of our geotechnical practice who specialize in a diversity of rock engineering projects. The salary range for this position is $151,000 to $190,000 per annum. Please note that Tetra Tech considers various factors in determining pay, including but not limited to: education, relevant and demonstrated work experience in the role, skills, geographic location, qualifications, certifications, and other competencies relevant to the needs of the business.
Your Role:
The role is fulfilling several key aspects that we believe will align with your position expectations, will further your own career growth, and foster the development and continued success of the rock engineering group. - Conduct billable project work through staged senior project reviews throughout a project from inception at the proposal stage through to final analysis, design recommendations, and project deliverables.
- A leader of engineering technical teams to deliver project on time and on budget. Performing staged senior reviews throughout projects and identifying, strategizing, and supporting the improvement of our technical capabilities and strengths.
- Keeping up to date with industry best practices and identifying new and existing methodologies that can be used to improve our delivery and provide an innovative or more cost effective/ sustainable solution.
- Demonstrate leadership in quality through fostering excellent quality by ensuring deliverables of the highest standard are issued to clients. Emphasizing and re-iterating the importance of quality from technical aspects to good project management.
- Active and proactive in staff training and development through mentoring staff as appropriate on projects and help guide the technical aspects of their careers.
- Foster and identify innovation, share the knowledge, publish technical papers both with clients and with other staff, and encourage conference and technical paper preparation by all staff.
- Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
- Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
- Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
- Additional duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in Geological or Geotechnical Engineering.
- An advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D.) is considered an asset.
- 18 – 25 years of mining industry or consulting engineering experience. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in a mine consulting engineering environment.
- Demonstrated technical leadership experience in open pit mining geomechanics. Strong track record of designing, executing, and managing all levels of engineering studies in open pit projects.
- Extensive experience and knowledge of all aspects of geological analysis and design including rock strength and failure mechanisms, rock mass characterizations, stability analyses, reinforcement designs, kinematics, stress analyses, bench reconciliation, and numerical modelling.
- Highly proficient in geological modelling software and 2D/3D geotechnical numerical modelling.
- Considerable practical experience in every aspect of mine site exploration including the development and management of field programs comprising geotechnical rock core logging, downhole hydrogeological testing, surface and downhole geophysics, and laboratory test scheduling.
- Demonstrated experience managing projects and delegating and overseeing lesser experienced staff work assignments through all aspects of rock mechanics' design process.
- Excellent technical writing skills and a strong desire to drive a technical quality culture to the highest standards, inspire innovation, and foster industry research and development.
- Strong people skills and an ability to work in a team environment, and to set and meet deliverable deadlines.
- Professional and responsive communicator with client management experience, a willing mentor to lesser experienced staff and a positive attitude.
- Consulting engineering business development experience with an ability to establish and maintain solid client relationships.
- Prioritizes health and safety in all aspects; from field staff safety to staff mental and physical wellbeing to integrating safety in design practices.
- Must be registered or eligible to register as a professional engineer in the Province of British Columbia.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
