The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is adding a Vice President, Mission Critical Solutions to Tetra Tech's Critical Building Infrastructure operating unit.

Impact:

The Mission Critical Data Center Business Development Lead (BD Lead) is responsible for the overall success of Tetra Tech's data center design business development program. Success includes the identification of new data center design opportunities and the securing of contracts to perform those design services.  Opportunities will come from existing- and BD Lead- developed clients in government and commercial co-locator and hyperscale markets. The BD Lead will work with marketing, sales, and engineering management across Tetra Tech's global footprint to assemble teams for opportunity pursuits and proposal preparation.  Market sector coordination across the various operating units in Tetra Tech's  High Performance Buildings Division where data center design groups reside is an extremely important role for this position.  Strong interpersonal communication and strategy development skills, technical knowledge, and enhanced personal motivation are requisite for success in this role.   Key performance indicators for the BD Leader include 1) achieving revenue goals established in coordination with the management team of the Mission Critical Data Center Program, 2) increased opportunities to propose on new work, and 3) seamless, efficient, and successful coordination of client outreach and strategy across the data center design operating units.  Incentives are available for meeting key performance indicators goals.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead the overall business planning process and meet or exceed targets established by the High Performance Building Division's Mission Critical Data Center leadership team for market sector growth and financial performance. 
  • Assume an account lead role for several clients and coordinate the efficient response to opportunities, the development of long-term client relationships, and conduct of work that meets clients' expectations.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to fellow engineering team members in developing and supporting the execution of business plans and strategies.
  • Identify opportunities ancillary to Tetra Tech's Mission Critical Data Center Program that can be satisfied by Tetra Tech's other business vertical resource groups.
  • Lead the identification of market sector trends, internal development needs, and hiring needs in specific reports to the market sector leadership team. 
  • Lead by example and reinforce Tetra Tech's High Performance Building Division's engineering excellence in project management, financial, risk management, and technical standards.
Your Role:

Business Strategy Development & Execution:

  • Lead in the development of a business strategy for increased market share, technical excellence, team development, brand development, portfolio diversification and profitable financial performance within the assigned sector(s). The business strategy should identify strategic collaboration opportunities with other market sectors, other business groups within the High Performance Buildings Division and Tetra Tech's other operating units.
  • Identify target clients, new and existing, in the primary markets and submarkets within the assigned sector(s) and lead the development of successful relationships with those target clients. Coordinate with the Mission Critical Data Center Program mechanical and electrical engineering market sector leads, operating unit Presidents, and senior counsel as appropriate for a complete key client analysis.
  • Perform sector specific outreach and prepositioning to better position our company for specific projects to improve the sector hit rate and to optimize marketing efforts.
  • Stay up to date with latest industry trends, innovations, and competitors for the assigned sector(s).
  • Research and identify future projects, appropriate review per Tetra Tech's Go/No-Go process and actively track their progress in anticipation of the issuance of an RFQ and RFP.
  • Assist in coordinating high quality timely responses to client requests, presentations, RFPs, and RFQs

Brand Development:

  • Ensure appropriate exposure of the company to new business prospects, network and participate in industry events to promote the company's mission and image for the assigned sector(s).
  • Develop and maintain outstanding relationships with owners/end-users, key clients, and sub-consultants and be a 'known entity' in the marketplace within the assigned sector(s).
  • Collaborate with the program managers, business development, communications, and marketing teams on company-wide key messaging initiatives, marketing targets, and sector specific marketing.
  • Develop and manage a business development budget for sector specific conferences for their assigned sector(s).

Risk Mitigation:

  • Qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate, assess, and make a recommendation for approval/denial for Work at Risk efforts and balance the immediate and long-term benefits and risks in accordance with Tetra Tech's Work at Risk policy.
  • Support each Program Managers and Project Managers in assessing Tetra Tech's Go/No-Go process.
  • Collaborate with the mechanical and electrical engineering program leads, senior counsel, operating unit Presidents regarding stop work decisions associated with contract negotiations, lack of payment, or other disputes.

Financial:

  • Assess and action financial trend information for the assigned market sector(s) and collaborate with the mechanical and electrical engineering market sector leads, operating unit Presidents, senior counsel, financial officers to improve and/or maintain financial performance regarding revenue, profitability, utilization, unbilled revenue, accounts receivable and days sales outstanding for the assigned sector(s).

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field.
  • A minimum of 7+ years of AEC experience with proven success in business strategy, project/team leadership, business development, and financial management.
  • A PE license is a plus, but not required.
  • Proven combination of intuition, market, and technical engineering knowledge is a must.
  • Experience with RFQ, RFP, qualification packages, and participation in Go/No-Go decision- making process.
  •  Experience tracking key financial metrics across program-based teams.
  •  Proven record of sector/service growth; existing client relationships in the data center market sector(s) a plus.
  • Relationship-centric strategist with a focus on early lead development and market differentiation by lead sourcing and early-stage teams' development.
  • Trustworthy, honest, resourceful, and self-motivated with the ability to manage to plan.
  • Excellent organization, time management, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven mentorship and team development including supervision of staff and career development of staff.
  • Contract management and risk mitigation through terms and conditions negotiations and sound evaluation skills of authorizing at risk efforts.
  • Ability to properly assess fee estimates and proposal language to clearly define scope and associated level of effort.
  •          Ability to identify and recruit sector specific strategic leaders.

Membership with industry-related organizations such as the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), US Green Building Council (USGBC), International Living Future Institute (ILFI), ASHRAE, IEEE, or Association of Energy Engineers is a plus.

This role can be performed from a wide range of locations throughout the US. The pay range for this position is between $200,000 and $300,000 annually. However, the pay offered may vary depending on primary work location, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and internal parity.
