Main Function:
- Collaborate with providers, nurses and other health professionals to diagnose, treat and help prevent respiratory conditions.
- Provide respiratory care to patient of all ages including but not limited to administering oxygen therapy, breathing treatments, aerosol medications, managing mechanical ventilators and other respiratory equipment.
- Educate patients, their families, and the community about respiratory conditions and the management.
- Coordinate services, staffing, training, stocking, and equipment functioning for the Respiratory Therapy department.
- Works closely with the Director of Cardiopulmonary Services to support the mission and strategic goals of Thompson Hospital.

- Compliant with all regulatory requirements included but not limited to requirements by JCAHO, HIPPA, and OSHA.
- Demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology in all areas that pertain to the practice of respiratory care.
- Understands disease processes and their impact on the cardiopulmonary system.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to provide best-practice care and excellent outcomes for the patients.
- Exhibit flexibility in decision making and prioritizing assignments.
- Function as a team member, relaying clear and concise communication to ensure optimal patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
- *Management Criteria (Staffing Education/Training/Competency) - 20%
- Directly supervises approximately 15 staff members.
- Interviews and takes part in the hiring of new Associates
- Coordinates the orientation of new Associates.
- Coordinates continuing education programs, ensuring compliance with regulatory and hospital requirements.
- Coordinates training and in-services for new or updated clinical procedures and completes annual competencies.
- Monitors work performance of direct reports.
- Completes performance evaluations of assigned direct reports.
- Uses quality monitors for tracking and improving clinical processes.
- Initiates process improvements by researching and updating current clinical procedures.
- Ensures processes meet all regulatory standards and inspection requirements.
- Ensures departmental procedures meet work related needs and all regulatory standards and requirements.
- Scheduling/Payroll
- Facilitates monthly schedule.
- Adjusts schedule to maintain appropriate staffing levels for daily operation.
- Budgets
- Monitors expenses and maintains expense/visit and revenue/visit within a set variance.
- Monitors staff salary expenses of direct reports.
- Works to decrease costs of clinical operations through inventory control and cost comparisons.
- *Technical Competency - 75%
- Performs all standard and advanced therapeutic interventions of Respiratory Department.
- Retains a current understanding of Respiratory Therapy practice through education and seminars
- Maintains competency and understanding of compliance and billing practices
- Responsible for and ensures that department-stocked supplies used in the daily therapeutic and operation of the department and/or health system are maintained at adequate levels to ensure full operation.
- Checks, cleans, maintains, and replaces equipment that is the responsibility of the department, coordinating repairs with Bio-Med as needed
- Documents proper, concise, and accurate notes regarding therapy administered
- Maintains accurate records of services rendered and initiates proper charges per department protocol.
- *Personal Accountability – 5%
- Maintains health/education records and skills as required by licensure and healthcare system requirements.
- Complete all department requirements and education on time.
Qualifications:
- Registered by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC)
- Licensed as a Respiratory Therapist by New York State Education Department Office of the Professions (NYSED OP)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification required
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification required within six (6) months of start date
- Graduate of a Commission of Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) accredited Respiratory Therapy program –AAS required, BS degree preferred.
- Recent experience in clinical environments performing technical duties supervised by this position.
- 3 years of progressive management experience with program planning, staff development, and business plan development and fiscal accountability preferred.
