Description
The OB First Assist collaborates with the surgeon and the healthcare team in performing a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient. The OB First Assist must have acquired the necessary knowledge, skill and judgement specific to clinical practice. The OB First Assist practices in collaboration with and at the direction of the surgeon in the operative phase of the labor experience.
- Apply knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative technique relative to operative procedures wherein the APP assists
- Apply principles of asepsis and infection control skillfully
- Assists in positioning, prepping, and draping of the patient, or performs these independently if directed by the surgeon
- Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels, and by other means as directed by the surgeon
- Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques by closely always observing the operative field, demonstrating stamina for sustained retraction and anticipating the needs of the surgeon
- Handles tissue as directed by the surgeon, sutures the peritoneum, fascia, subcutaneous tissue and skin, by demonstrating the different types of closure, and correct approximation of tissue layers.
- Cleans the wound and applies surgical dressings
- Affixes and stabilizes all drains
- Assists in transferring the patient from the operating room
- Lives CARES values at all times (commitment, action, respect, excellence and service)
Schedule
Per Diem, Call shifts can be 12 or 24 hours.
Qualifications
- Must live within 30 minutes of the hospital campus
- NYS certification by the National Commission on Certification of Nurse Practitioners
- RNFA certification required (if applicant is a Nurse Practitioner)
- NYS Licensure and current Registration required
- DEA license required
- BCLS certification required, ACLS recommended
- Able to gain appropriate FFTH privileges required
- Previous experience in an operating room preferred
Education
- Graduation from an AMA/AHO approved school as a Nurse Practitioner
- Meets continuing education requirements of the applicable discipline board
Pay Rate
$10.00/hour to be on call and $140.00/hour if called in with a guarantee of 2 hours.
