Can accommodate 8, 10, or 12 hour shifts.  

Pay Range: $18.64 - $21.50 per hour, based on experience.

Main Function: The assist the RN in the care of the Perioperative patient in the preoperative, perioperative and postoperative periods.

Required Job Specific Competencies:

  • Ability to work independently and exhibits flexibility in decision making and prioritizing assignments.
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with the medical and nursing staff as well as other disciplines and departments within the facility.
  • Actively guards the confidentiality of sensitive info including but not limited to the patients, staff and the health system.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient.
  • The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret each patient's requirements relative to age-specific needs and to the care needed.
  • Assures that there is always appropriate and adequate equipment on hand in the operating suite to assure safe and expedient care for the patient receiving services.
  • Initiates procedures to assure that all equipment is maintained and in good repair.

Key Responsibilities:

  • *Transport of patients. - 5%
    • Transports patients in a safe manner, sensitive to patients comfort and safety needs at all times.
    • Pushes wheelchairs, stretchers and beds in a safe manner.
  • *Demonstrates competence in basic principles of sterilization. - 5%
    • Demonstrates sterile techniques when handling or opening sterile packages and supplies for surgery.
    • Demonstrates proper technique in applying sterile gloves as needed.
    • Demonstrates understanding of sterile supplies by rotating stocks checks packages integrity and removes outdated packages.
    • Per policy, runs autoclave cultures weekly, changes graph forms daily and maintains related records.
  • *Demonstrates ability to perform technical tasks to support the OR and under the direction of the RN. - 30%
    • Ascertains needed equipment for OR rooms and checks to make sure it is functional and clean.
    • Post-procedure, cleans equipment and puts in appropriate storage area.
    • Reports equipment problems to the Charge Nurse and puts in a work order for equipment to be fixed.
    • Works collaboratively with all members of the surgical team, Instrument Technician and Sterile Reprocessing Department.
    • Assists with supply inventory as needed.
    • Delivers “Stat” specimen to Laboratory, Diagnostic Imaging, and Mammography when required.
    • Obtains blood products from lab as directed.
    • May answer telephone with appropriate etiquette, takes written messages to personnel in various operating rooms.
    • Performs weekly cleaning of sub-sterile room autoclaves per manufacture guidelines.
  • *Under the guidance of the Operating Room Nurse Leader manages Operating Room Equipment requisition and repair/replace functions - 25%
    • Accurately reports all pertinent information related to equipment to the OR Nurse Leader.
    • Liaison with outside vendors in obtaining special order items to be here on the scheduled day of surgery.
    • Places orders/requisitions for all equipment needed by:
      • accurately and neatly completing order requisitions
      • obtaining authorization signatures for acquisition of needed items
    • Coordinates the receiving and storage of all OR equipment to ensure timely arrival.
    • Demonstrates initiative in problem solving related to equipment needs.
    • Shows initiative in learning names and the proper use, care and cleaning of all OR equipment.
    • Keeps self-knowledgeable about equipment with respect to warranties and where to obtain replacements or repairs.
  • *The Perioperative Attendant/Equipment Tech functions as part of the Surgical Team. - 30%
    • Assists in maintaining orderliness of the O.R. Suite, kitchen, utility room, storage and locker room area.
    • Shows initiative in properly identifying equipment, supplies and instruments, and the proper use, care and cleaning of all OR equipment.
    • Always assures that own assignment is completed and shows initiative in assuring that all tasks are completed for own shift.
    • Demonstrates team spirit in assuring that all Perioperative Assistants have had opportunity for assigned breaks.
    • Able to prioritize tasks to ensure patient safety.
    • Anticipates supplies, instruments and linen needs for her/his assigned room(s).
  • *The Perioperative Attendant/Equipment Tech functions in covering for the Anesthesia Technician when this person is not available for work. - 5%
    • Cleans the anesthesia equipment according to hospital policy and guidelines to protect self and patients.

Working Conditions/Hazards/Equipment & Machinery Used:

  • May be exposed to infectious diseases, muscle strains or injury in handling of equipment or helping with patients who might be combative.
  • Walks, stands for long periods.
  • Must be able to lift, push and pull heavy weights during patient care.
  • Works in well lit, well ventilated area.
  • Maybe subject to variable temperatures.
  • Frequently exposed to disagreeable odors, sights, sounds, body wastes, blood, etc.
  • Exposed to emotional stresses associated with the care of the ill and dying.

Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or equivalent required
  • BLS certification required
  • Experience in bedside patient care in a long term or acute health facility, preferred.

 

Pay Range: $18.64 - $21.50 per hour

Starting Pay: Based on Experience
