Summary of Job Duties: The gift shop assistant manager is responsible for assisting the gift shop manager with the development and implementation of a business plan for the Cancer Institute Gift Shop. At the direction of the manager, the assistant manager will act in their absence (while manager is on vacation, market, sales meeting). The assistant will also supervise the volunteers in the shop. The assistant manager must be a self-starter and have demonstrated skills as a team player. Outstanding business and communication skills are essential in this highly visible position. The gift shop assistant manager reports directly to the Gift Shop Manager.
Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business or related field of study PLUS Three (3) years of retail or direct sales experience.

  • Gift shop/retail floor management, arrangement of retail floor space, merchandise display experience and coordination of sales staff experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years or more in direct sales, buying quality merchandise at market and from sales reps, gift shop management and organization experience, experience in design of retail floor space, merchandise display, working within the system to pay bills in a timely fashion, working closely with the credit card buyer department and coordination/supervision of volunteers


Additional Information:

Responsibilities: 

  • Assists the gift shop manager in developing and implementing a business plan for growth in profits and customer satisfaction.

  • Manages financial transactions throughout the business day and reconciles daily reports.

  • Supervises day to day inventory control and the checking in and storing of merchandise.

  • Compiles all needed data for perpetual inventory records and coordinates the financial operation of the gift shop with all necessary departments.

  • Supervises daily volunteers and manages their recruitment, orientation and scheduling.

  • Maintains a daily awareness of the needs of patients, staff, and other customers.

  • Performs effective communication skills in interactions with internal and external customers and maintains a positive, friendly atmosphere in a highly visible business, taking responsibility for a wide range of work tasks and situations which may arise in the absence of the gift shop manager, volunteer director, or assistant director.

  • Contributes to the organization of special events at the Cancer Institute and UAMS and coordinates with the volunteer department on appreciation events and staff breakfasts.

  • Coordinates with other groups to sell items for special events and schedules special after-hours functions, if needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
