Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system at UChicago Medicine as a Registry Speech Pathologist with our Speech & Swallowing team. Our program utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to address a wide variety of disorders that stem from equally diverse causes, including, but not limited to, complex medical conditions, neurological diseases and chemoradiation therapy and surgery. 

 

Under the direction and supervision of the Speech Pathology Manager and Ambulatory Operations Director, the Speech Pathologist provides speech pathology services (consultation, evaluation, and therapy) in an acute care hospital and ambulatory care setting.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Evaluate inpatient and ambulatory patients with communication and swallowing disorders; plan and provide speech/language and/or swallowing therapy to meet patient care needs
  • Utilize electronic medical record system to document evaluation and therapy services and to document patient encounters (phone conversations, patient and family education)    
  • Submit procedure charges for each patient reflecting billing for the appropriate level of service
  • Assist in maintaining examination rooms in a neat and orderly condition. Monitor supply utilization to ensure adequate levels of supplies are available in each room
  • Attend patient care rounds as applicable to maintain multidisciplinary interaction and collaboration.  

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Master of Science/Arts in Speech-Language Pathology
  • ASHA certification
  • Licensure with the State of Illinois in Speech-Language Pathology

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of experience in the areas of swallowing disorders and speech-language-cognitive disorders in acute care facilities, with varied populations, including disorders related to neurogenic diseases, head and neck cancer and complex medical conditions
  • Training and/or clinical experience in the areas of aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia, voice, developmental communication disorders, and dysphagia, including experience in videofluorographic swallow examinations, are preferred
  • Knowledge and utilization of appropriate patient care protocols relating to the physical and psychological needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients is required and may be obtained through on-the-job competency training
  • Candidate should demonstrate proven ability to consistently perform assigned tasks promptly and with a high level of customer satisfaction

 

Position Details:

  • Job Type/FTE: PRN (0.1 FTE)
  • Shift: Days – Maximum 12-hour shift (regular weekend rotation (1-2 weekends per month) and occasional weekdays)
