Department Purpose

The mission of Information and Educational Technology (IET) is to create and support an information technology environment that enhances the ability of the UC Davis community to teach, do research and provide public service. In support of the University's mission, IET will deliver an infrastructure of technological services appropriate to the requirements of the campus community. 

The Enterprise Platforms team within the Application Services unit of Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS) provides application development and support for software platforms, cloud and mobile development and has a high campus impact, as it supports mission-critical systems and applications used by the entire population of students, faculty, staff, and university affiliates. The Application Delivery Cloud Operations Engineer within the Enterprise Platforms team primarily performs automation and infrastructure as code work, scripting, application development and troubleshooting.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Enterprise Platforms Supervisor within the IET Application Services unit of EIS, the incumbent acts as a cloud infrastructure and automation developer and deployment engineer for the IET Enterprise Platforms team. This position troubleshoots, supports and contributes to custom applications maintained by the Enterprise Platforms team that enable access control and account information management to campus cloud practitioners with accounts in Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). A core portion of the work involves administering the AWS, Azure and GCP organizations that centralize account management and provisioning of public cloud accounts on the UC Davis campus. Also responsible for deploying security solutions and configurations in the various campus cloud organizations. The incumbent utilizes experience with infrastructure-as-code automation tools, CI/CD pipelines and familiarity and experience with scripting and the software development lifecycle.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Hire MUST be located in-state. (Out of state applicants will be considered but must relocate instate if hired). This position can be done primarily remote with the expectation that the employee must be available to come on site should management deem it necessary for emergencies, meetings, support activities, etc. No reimbursement of travel expenses, travel time not considered work hours.
  • Due to the mission-critical services provided by this department, this position may work hours other than M-F 8-5, especially in response to system problems.
  • Vacation is restricted during peak work periods.
  • Occasional travel required.
  • Adhere to workplace safety practices, read information communicated about workplace safety, complete required safety training on time, and report any workplace safety issues promptly to their supervisor or the designated safety coordinator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Experience designing and deploying cloud infrastructure, platforms, and applications using infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Cloudformation, Ansible, Chef, Pulumi or similar)
  • Experience with version control systems (Git, Subversion, etc.) and knowledge of software development workflows using these systems.
  • Experience using, designing, and troubleshooting deployment automation including continuous integration/continuous deployment pipelines, automated testing systems and build servers.
  • Experience analyzing and strategizing about the security of operating systems, applications, and source code.
  • Experience managing Amazon Web Services solutions including CloudFormation, EC2, VPC, S3, RDS, Security Groups, NACLs, System Manager, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, Lambda and Organizations.
  • Experience using one or more common programming languages JavaScript or Python preferred).

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Working knowledge of distributed computing systems including basic computer networking, server administration, basic application security and cryptography


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred License/Certification: 

  • Current Amazon Web Service certification or Microsoft Azure certification

Preferred Education/Experience:   

  • Experience designing artificial intelligence tools and/or using machine learning to accomplish technical tasks or conduct data analysis.
  • Experience with security tooling such as SIEMs, log aggregation solutions, intelligent threat detection software, vulnerability scanning utilities, etc.
  • Experience applying one or more formal security frameworks to a production environment (ie. PCI, HIPAA, FISMA etc.) and experience with NIST 800-171 and/or ITAR.
  • Experience with frontend web application design and development using JavaScript frameworks like Vue.js, React, Angular
  • Experience maintaining public cloud organizations including managing access controls, deploying configuration changes to member accounts, applying policy configurations to the organization, and creating and maintaining scripts and automation to manage member accounts and organization-wide services.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Interpersonal and written communication skills to effectively convey technical information to technical and non-technical individuals at all organizational levels.
  • Backend web server and API development skills.
  • Data science and database design skills.
